If only…
Would rather …
It’s time…
As if/ as though…
 Ми вживаємо Past Simple коли
говоримо про теперішній або
майбутній час, але при цьому ситуації
уявні, малоймовірні, гіпотетичні. Існує
декілька способів, як можна це
показати.
CONDITIONAL TYPE 2

 I would buy this T-shirt if there was my


size.
(Я б купив цю футболку, якби був мій
розмір.)
 You would sleep better if you went to
bed at the same time.
(Ти б спав краще, якби лягав спати в
одну і ту саму годину.)
I WISH/ IF ONLY + PAST SIMPLE

 We use I wish/ If only + Past Simple to


make
a wish about a present or future
situation which we would like to be
different.

I wish you didn’t have to go tomorrow.


(= But you have to)
I wish I had a bigger house. (= But I
don’t.)
I WISH/ IF ONLY + PAST SIMPLE

 I wish we stayed at home. (Я хотів би,


щоб ми залишилися вдома.)
 I wish I knew the answer. (Я хотіла б
знати відповідь.) ( Якби я знала
відповідь)
 If only we had more time. (Якби тільки
у нас було більше часу.)
 If only I had his phone number. (Якби
тільки у мене був його номер
телефону.)
WISH/IF ONLY+ COULD +
BARE INFINITIVE

We use wish/If only+ could + bare


infinitive
to express regret about something we
cannot do it in present.

I wish I could speak English. (= But I


can’t)
WOULD RATHER + PAST
SIMPLE
 We use Would rather + Past Simple to say
that we would prefer somebody to do or
not to do something.
 The subject of would rather must be
different from the subject of the main verb
I would rather you didn't smoke here. (Я б
вважала за краще, щоб ти не палив
тут.)
We would rather she went to university. (Ми
б вважали за краще, щоб вона пішла в
університет.)
IT’S (HIGH) TIME + PAST
SIMPLE
 We use It’s time + Past Simple to
complain, criticise or express what we
think should be done.

It's time you went to bed. (Тобі пора


лягати спати.)

It's high time he found a job. (Йому пора


знайти роботу.)
AS IF / AS THOUGH +
PAST SIMPLE
We use As if / as though + Past Simple for
untrue situations.

You look as if you were bored, but I am sure you


are intersted. (Ти виглядаєш так, як ніби тобі
нудно, але я впевнений, що тобі цікаво.)

He should speak as though he knew something


about it, even though he doesn't know
anything. (Йому треба говорити так, як ніби
він знає щось про це, навіть якщо він нічого
не знає.)
NOTE:
IN THE UNREAL PAST WE USUALLY USE WERE INSTEAD OF WAS.

"If my brother were here, he would buy


me a beer." (UNREAL: My brother is in
Costa Rica.)
