GAD: Symptoms, Prevalence,
Gender differences, Comorbidity
• GAD/ Free-floating anxiety disorder is an excessive, uncontrollable worry
about even minor matters disturbing daily activities in personal, social &
work life, for at least 6 months
• Symptoms-
• Restlessness, being easily fatigued, difficulty in concentration, irritability,
muscle tension, disturbed sleep, diffuse uneasiness, constantly future-
oriented, marked vigilant about possibility of threat, frequently tend to delay,
check
• Prevalence- 3% of the population,approx. 6% of the lifetime
• Gender differences: Women> Men(2:1)
• High comorbidity with Specific &Social Phobias, Panic disorder, PTSD
GAD: Causal factors & Treatment
• Psychological factors-
• Perceptions of uncontrollability & unpredictability, may be due to past
life experiences in family or work life OR history of trauma in
childhood years
• Less tolerance to uncertainty, high rigidity by temperament
• May have a history of intrusive, over controlling parenting style
• Cognitive biases for threatening information(danger schemas)
GAD: Causal factors & Treatment
• Biological factors-
Genetic factors not that prominent,
Neurotransmitter and Neurohormonal abnormalities(functional
deficiency in GABA & Serotonin, which inhibits anxiety in the brain
&lack of ‘feel good’ hormone
• Treatment-
Medication(anti-anxiety drugs)
