Anxiety disorders
• Anxiety--- General feeling of apprehension about possible danger
• Fear ---- Alarming response to immediate danger
• Anxiety disorders found quite common (25-30% of total population in US)
• Comparatively more in women, creating personal,economic,healthcare problems
• Also found more in people suffering from asthama,hypertension, chronic
pain,IBS…
• Neurotic disorders
• Not incoherent, dangerous, away from reality
1. Phobic disorders- Symptoms,
Prevalence,
Onset, Gender differences
• Phobia is persistent and disproportionate fear of specific object/
situation that represents little or no danger but leads to avoidance of
these situations
• Specific phobia
• Persistent fear of real or imaginary specific object/ situation
• Zoophobia,Clastrophobia,Nyctophobia, Algophobia,Hydrophobia….
• Symptoms--- Increase in HR,BP, sweating, nausea, dizziness, fainting
• Prevalence--- Women> Men
• Onset---Diff age groups for diff phobias, Zoophobia(Childhood),
Clastrophobia(Adolescence)

• Social phobia (pg.163) Symptoms---
• Marked fear of one / more social situations in which he is likely to get
evaluated by others, lasting for 6 months(eg.Conversation with
familiar/strangers, eating with others, performing in front of others)
• Fear of being negative evaluation from others. Hence, social situations
are avoided
• Significant impairment in social, occupational and other imp areas of
functioning
• Prevalence--- Women > Men
• Onset--- Adolescence /Young adulthood

• Panic disorder(pg. 167)—with / without Agoraphobia(fear of public /
crowded places)
• Unexpected/uncued
• Symptoms—Abrupt, intense, reach peak in 10 min & subside in 20-30
min.
• 4/13 physical symptoms at least for 1 month, with psychological
symptoms like depersonalisation, fear of dying, fear of going crazy or
loosing control
• Prevalence--- Women> Men
• Onset--- Adolescence/ Young adulthood
