EROSION

EROSION is the wearing

away of land. Natural
agents such as water, wind
and gravity are eroding the
land surface since geologic
times.
EROSION INDEX
or ERODIBILITY
INDEX
• Measure selected to determine
whether a soil map unit is highly
erodible
• The greater the proportion of
detachable fine particles, the higher
the soil erodibility index and the
more likely is wind erosion to occur
• It also called the K factor, the rate of
soil loss per unit of R ( rainfall
erosivity index based on EI30 --30
minutes rainfall intensity energy
causing erosion) on a unit plot and
indicates the relative eases at which
the soil is detached and transported.
SOIL ERODIBILITY
INDEX BASED ON
SOIL TYPE
SEDIMENT
DELIVERY RATIO
• The ratio of sediment yield to gross
erosion
• Probably the simplest and most
likely method to be used in the field
• It has been derived from numerous
sediment surveys
• The sediment yield from an area
divided by the gross erosion of that
same area
• Expressed as a percent and
represents the efficiency of the
watershed in moving soil particles
from areas of erosion to the point
where sediment yield is measured
BED LOAD is the
relatively coarse
bed material load
that is moved at
the bed surface
through sliding,
rolling, and
saltation (hopping)
• It describes the particles in a flowing
fluid (usually water) that are
transported along the stream bed
• It is complementary to suspended
load and wash load
SUSPENDED LOAD is
the relatively finer
bed material that is
kept in suspension in
the flow through
turbulence eddies and
transported in
suspension mode by
the flowing water
• Refers to that part of the total
sediment transport which is
maintained in suspension by
turbulence in the flowing water for
considerable periods of time without
contact with the stream bed. It
moves with practically the same
velocity as that of the flowing water
RESERVIOR
DELTA
DELTAS are major
sites and sand and
mud deposition. They
contain significant
volumes of
hydrocarbons
worldwide.
• Deltas form as rivers empty their
water and sediment into another
body of water, such as an ocean,
lake, or another river.
