Abstract
• A material or device that is capable of converting the energy contained in photons of
light into an electrical voltage and current is said to be photovoltaic.

• Single diode model is simple and easy to implement, whereas double diode model has
better accuracy which acquiesces for more precise forecast of PV systems performance.

• Performance analysis between solar models based on temperature and solar irradiance of
solar cell.

• This thesis differentiates the current-voltage (I-V) and power-voltage (P-V)

characteristics performance at standard test condition (STC).

• Using this MATLAB simulation-based comparative analysis, double diode model is

found to contribute superior performance compared to single diode model. 3
Introduction
• Solar energy is a promising renewable energy source that will contribute to secure future
energy demands without emitting CO2

• A solar/PV cell is formed by fabricating a p-n junction in a thin wafer of semiconductor.

• I-V and P-V; the output characteristics of a PV cell are nonlinear and fluctuate with solar
radiation, cell temperature of mathematical model.

• A comparison between single-diode model and double-diode model of photovoltaic (PV)

module to determine cell accuracy for different changing temperature and irradiance.

4
Aim and Objectives
Aim
• To analyze performance of Different Solar Modules Based on Solar Cell Parameters
Objectives
• To study equivalent circuit of solar cell
• To study relevant mathematical equation of solar cell models
• To build modeling of single and double diode cell
• To analyze behavior of single and double diode cell under varying temperature and
irradiance.

5
Simplest Equivalent Circuit of a PV Cell
• A simple equivalent circuit model for a PV cell consists of a real diode in parallel with an
ideal current source.

• The ideal current source delivers current in proportion to the solar flux to which it is
exposed.

6
Fill Factors (FF) for PV System

• The fill factor is the ratio of the power at the MPP to the product of Voc and Isc
• The best commercial solar cells have FF over 70%

7
Impacts of Temperature and Insolation on I–V Curves

8
Electrical Model of PV Cell

• For various commercial operations, distinct types of photovoltaic (PV) cell

technologies have been used.
• These cell technologies can be classified as poly-crystalline, mono-crystalline and thin
film.
• Single and double diode PV models have been widely used for modelling the output
characteristic of a PV module.

Specifications for PV cell

10
Electrical Model of Single - diode PV Cell (2/4)
• Single diode model is the simplest as it has a current source in parallel to a diode.

Simulation Result of Single Diode Cell at STC

• Short-Circuit Current (Isc):

Maximum current when voltage is zero
(8.206 A).
• Constant Current Region:
Current remains stable as voltage increases.
Open-Circuit Voltage (Voc)Maximum voltage
(~33.05 V) when current is near zero.

I –V Curve of Single Diode Cell

18
Simulation Result of Single Diode Cell at STC
• Power-Voltage Relationship:
Power increases with voltage until it reaches a
peak, then decreases rapidly.
The maximum power point (MPP) occurs at
~33.05 V with a power output of 7.69 W.
Behavior at Lower and Higher Voltages:
At low voltages, power increases gradually due
to high current.
P –V Curve of Single Diode Cell Beyond the MPP, power drops sharply as
voltage continues to rise, due to a decrease in
19
current.

• Temperature Levels:
Curves show PV cell performance at 0°C,
25°C, 50°C, and 75°C.
• Open-Circuit Voltage (Voc):
Voc decreases as temperature increases
(leftward shift).
Example: Voc is higher at 0°C than at 75°C.
• Short-Circuit Current (Isc):
Isc remains relatively constant across different
I –V Curve of Single Diode Cell temperatures.

• Temperature and Power Output:

As temperature increases, peak power output
decreases.
Higher temperatures shift the maximum power
point (MPP) towards lower voltage levels and
reduced power output.
Example:
At 0°C, the solar cell achieves higher
maximum power than at 75°C, where the output
P –V Curve of Single Diode Cell
is significantly lower.
21
Simulation Result of Single Diode Cell
• Four irradiance levels are presented: 600
W/m², 800 W/m², 1000 W/m², and 1200
W/m².
• As seen in the graph, increasing irradiance
leads to a proportional increase in the current
(I) output of the solar cell while having a
smaller effect on the voltage
• At lower irradiance levels, such as
600W/m², the current reaches approximately
I –V Curve of Single Diode Cell
4.5 A at its maximum, whereas at the highest
irradiance of 1200 W/m², the current exceeds
22
Simulation Result of Single Diode Cell

• The MPP shifts to higher power values as the

irradiance increases, with the highest power
output observed at an irradiance level of
1200 W/m².
• For lower irradiances, such as 600 W/m², the
power output is significantly reduced,
peaking at around 100 W, while at the
highest irradiance (1200 W/m²), the power
P-V Curve of Single Diode Cell reaches approximately 275 W.
