• There are two types of input devices :
1) Manual Input Devices :
Devices require the user to enter data manually, such as a keyboard or a
mouse.
2) Direct Input Devices:
Direct data entry systems allow data to be entered semi or fully
automatically. These are usually used in specialist systems, such as retail
or industrial system. Data is entered into computer directly by a
machine /device.

Keyboard
Keyboards are one of the most commonly used manual input

devices.

 Keyboards are used to input the following into the computer:

- Text - Numbers - Instructions

 Most keyboards use a QWERTY key layout.

Special keyboards called 'Ergonomic Keyboards' have been

developed to help reduce health problems (such as

repetitive strain injury)linked with typing.

Advantages/Disadvantages of using a Keyboard.
Advantages Disadvantages
Enables fast entry of text into People with wrist and hand problems
documents. can find keyboard painful to use

Very easy to use (you just press the keys) Keyboards are quite large and can take
up a lot of desk space.

Information that you input instantly Entering data is slow when compared to

Proximity Used when parking cars to judge distance.

Movement Detects movement which could trigger an alarm

Pressure Used in burglar alarms

Real world measurements are collected

Direct Input Devices
Direct Input devices require less human
interaction in order to get data from computer.

Magnetic stripe readers

Magnetic Strip Readers are used to read data found on magnetic stripes
found on the back of cards.
USE:

Bank Cards: Contains Account details- ATM or EFTPOS ( Electronic Fund transfer at
point of sale)
Arcade: Contains balance
Security/Hotel Rooms: Allows entry to specific room.
Gift Cards (Vouchers) – amount of vouchers

Advantages: Disadvantages

• Fast data entry compared to keyboard • Stripe could become unreadable -

• Secure/Error Free – No Typing scratched
• Not effected by water • Does not work at a distance
and robust if dropped • Easily Lost/misplaced
• Easily Updated
Contactless debit or credit
cards
 Contactless debit or credit cards allow customers to pay for items worth up to a
certain amount of money without entering their PIN.
How it works

The payment terminal picks up a signal from the chip to process and
complete the transaction when the card is within a few centimetres
distance.
Advantages: Disadvantages

• Quicker Transaction meaning • Less secure than chip and pin

less time spent at POS. method.
• Don’t have to use PIN • Anyone could use card if lost.
• Transaction data (account • It is easer for thieves to copy
details) is encrypted. details of the card.
• Only small payments can be
made
Chip and PIN readers
Chip and PIN readers are similar to smart card readers but are used at EFTPOS terminals.
The device has a slot into which the card is placed and the chip is read; the PIN is entered using the
keypad.
USE:
Users can make payment at shops, restaurants by simply
inserting their credit/debit card into the chip and pin reader
and typing in their pin.
Advantages: Disadvantages

Learning Objectives
Learner will be able to:
Identify Optical Mark Recognition/Reader (OMR), Optical
Character Recognition/Reader (OCR), bar code reader, QR
scanner
List the advantages and disadvantages of the above device
Examples of RFID
RFID readers
Radio Frequency Identification
RFID reads information stored on tags (small silicon chip that can be
placed on a sticker) using radio waves. RFID tags can be attached to
objects or animals/people.
The RFID tag is made up of two components:
 A microchip that stores and processes information
 An antenna which is used to receive and transmit data/ information.
USE:
• Track movement of animals (livestock) or people
• Stock Control: Scan stock items for quantity
• Airports: Track Luggage to make sure nothing is lost
• Library : Books can be tracked in and out automatically by readers at the library entrance

Advantages: Disadvantages

• Can read objects from a distance. • Radio symbols can be jammed or hacked.
• It is a very robust and reliable technology. • More expensive than a barcode
• Very fast reading – quick response, Bidirectional data • Tags could interfere with each other.
transfer
• Allows read/write operations to take place
• Can read biometric readings
Think and answer

An automatic washing machine contains a device to

read RFID chips sewn into clothing. When an item of
clothing is placed in the washing machine it is
scanned.

Describe how the data is read from the RFID chip.

Answer :
The washing machine sends out (interrogation waves) radio signal
to read the data
from the RFID. They act as a passive transponder. The benefit of
using RFID technology is that it stops material being incorrectly
washed.
Also it stops coloured items of clothing being in the wrong wash.
In addition it stops clothing of different material being washed
with others.
Furthermore it allows the wash cycle to be set automatically. RFID
technology will know the amount of water to
use so less water will be wasted.

(OMR)
Uses
• Used to read questionnaires, multiple-choice examination papers, voting papers and
many other types of form where responses are registered in the form of lines or shaded
areas.
• Lottery Tickets

expensive.
Optical Character Reader(OCR)
Examples of
OCR
OCR OMR
Because this method reads handwriting, it is possible for Because this involves shading in lozenges to answer set
customers to extend their answers to questions questions, the information obtained is limited to the
choices offered in each question

This method can read handwriting – but if the handwriting is OMR relies on simply detecting where marks have been
poor it may cause reading errors made on a page; the position of the marks is compared to a
template stored in memory

OCR is used for converting printed documents to an editable OMR simply reads the position of marks so it is ideal for
electronic format multiple-choice exam papers

OCR requires a complex recognition system This method requires complex (and expensive) forms to be
completed; but the recognition system is simpler than OCR

Fewer ‘how to fill in’ instructions are needed for forms This method requires more ‘how to fill in’ instructions, it is
designed to be completed and then read by OCR easier and faster for customers to complete OMR forms
than to complete OCR forms

While OCR is more accurate than data entered into a computer OMR is essentially a more accurate method for reading
by keyboard, there are still problems recognising all types of data than OCR
handwriting leading to inaccuracies
Barcode Reader

# Used to read information that is stored on product's barcodes.

# The barcode scanner reads the information stored on the
barcode using alight which is reflected and translated into digital
information.

# Once a barcode has been scanned, a computer can read the

information stored on the barcode and access details about the
product that are stored in a database.

# Handheld scanners are also commonly used to read bar codes

(usually if items are too large and heavy to move to the scanner).
• What is QR code ?

• How and where do we use it ?

• Can I have my own QR Code?

Quick Response (QR) codes are special barcodes that can be read using QR
reading devices, mainly installed as an application on smartphones. These
codes link the user directly to text, emails or websites.

Actuators
• When a computer is used to control devices, such as a conveyer belt or
a valve, it is usually necessary to use an actuator to, for example,
start/stop the conveyer belt or open/close the valve.
• An actuator is a mechanical or electromechanical device such as a
relay, solenoid or motor. We will consider a solenoid as the example;
this converts an electrical signal into a magnetic field producing linear
motion:
