DEFINITION OF TERMS:
1) Change in
Rate of Reaction concentration
The rate of reaction tells us how of reactants or
fast a chemical reaction happens. products
It’s measured by how much overtime.
reactant disappears or how much 2) Amount of
product appears over a certain product formed
amount of time. It is also the speed or reactant
at which a chemical reaction occurs, consumed per
typically measured by: unit time.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE RATE
OF REACTION:
Concentration of Reactants: Temparature:
A higher concentration of
reactants leads to more Increasing the temperature
collisions, which increases the generally speeds up the reaction
rate of reaction. because particles move faster and
collide more often.
Surface Area of Reactants
The smaller the particles of the reactants, Pressure (for gases)
the larger the surface area, and the faster Increasing pressure for
the reaction.
reactions involving gases
Catalysts: These are substances that speed can increase the rate by
up the reaction without being consumed forcing the particles closer
in the process.
Examples of Rate of Reaction
in Real Life:
Cooking an Egg: Food Spoilage:
The process of cooking an egg Bacteria cause the food
involves proteins denaturing faster at higher
due to heat, which is a tempearatures.
reaction that happens at a Refrigerating the food
specific rate. The higher the slows down the reaction
heat, the faster the reaction, rate.
and the quicker the egg
cooks.
Examples of Rate of Reaction
in Science:
(Fast) Burning a Wood: (Slow) Rusting Iron
The wood disappears rapidly The iron slowly reacts with
as it reacts to oxygen. oxygen and water over a long
period.
(Moderate) Digestion of
Food:
The wood disappears rapidly as
it reacts to oxygen.
How Do we solve for The Rate
of Reaction?
The rate of Reaction is often expressed as the change in
concentration of a reactant or product over time. A
simple equation can be:

Rate = (Change in conentration )

___________________
(Change in time s)
Example 1:

What is the concentration of a reactant which

decreases from 0.1 moles per liter in 10 seconds?

Rate = ___________________
0.1 mol = 0.01 mol/s
10 seconds
Example 2:

What is the concentration of a reactant which

decreases from 0.8 moles to 0.4moles in 10 seconds?

Rate = 0.8 mol - 0.4 mol

___________________ = 0.04 mol/s
10 seconds
Example 3:

W In a reaction, the amount of product formed is 5

grams in 2 minutes. What is the rate of reaction?

Rate = 5 grams
___________________ = 0.041 grams/min
120 minutes

( 2 mins x 60 sec - 120 sec )
