TYPES OF
FUNCTIONS
1. An injective
function (injection) or one-
to-one function is a function
that maps distinct elements of
its domain to distinct
elements of its codomain.

A function is one-to-one if no
two different inputs map to
the same output.
What was our previous topic all about? It is about Relations and Functions

1. What is a Relation? is a set of Ordered pairs

2. Who can give me an example of ordered pairs? (2, 3)
3. In general, any ordered pair in the coordinate plane can be written in the
form of? What? (x, y)
4. What do you call is the set of all first coordinates from the ordered pairs?
Domain
5. Example ordered pair (2 and 3), can you tell me where is the domain in that
example? 2
6. How many ways to represent the Relation? 4 ways…and what are those?
Ordered pairs, mapping, table of values, and Graph
7. What is a Function? A function is a special type of a relation in which each
element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range
8. There are 3 types of Functions,
• Injective Function (it is also known as one-to-one function)
• Bijective Function (it is also known as one-to-one correspondence)
• Surjective functions (it is also known as onto Function

2. Bijective Function: A
function that has both injective
and surjective.

it is also known as one-to-one

3. Surjective functions, also
called onto functions, is when
every element in the codomain is
mapped to by at least one
element in the domain.
Notice that the arrow diagram on the left is a
surjection because every element in the
codomain (B) is mapped to from some
element in the domain A. But the arrow diagram
on the right is not a surjection because not
every element in the codomain (B) is mapped to
— poor little g doesn’t have a buddy.
When you are given either a mapping diagram or
a relation, all you have to do is compare the
elements in the codomain with the elements in
the range. If all the values match, then the
function is onto, otherwise the function is not
onto.
