TYPES OF
FUNCTIONS
1. An injective
function (injection) or one-
to-one function is a function
that maps distinct elements of
its domain to distinct
elements of its codomain.
A function is one-to-one if no
two different inputs map to
the same output.

3. Surjective functions, also
called onto functions, is when
every element in the codomain is
mapped to by at least one
element in the domain.
Notice that the arrow diagram on the left is a
surjection because every element in the
codomain (B) is mapped to from some
element in the domain A. But the arrow diagram
on the right is not a surjection because not
every element in the codomain (B) is mapped to
— poor little g doesn’t have a buddy.
When you are given either a mapping diagram or
a relation, all you have to do is compare the
elements in the codomain with the elements in
the range. If all the values match, then the
function is onto, otherwise the function is not
onto.

YES
Find the range values of the function for the given
domain. y= -3x+2 {(-1, 0, 1, 2)}
y= -3x+2
y= -3(2)+2
y= -6+2
y= -4
The range values for the given domain are {(5, 2, -1, -4)}
Evaluate the given function rules for x = 2
1. y = x + 5
2. y = 2x – 1
3. y = -x + 2

#7-9
#10-12
For each relation {(1,4),(2,8),(3,12),(4,16),(5,20)}
A. find the domain of the relation
B. find the range of the relation.

15. Use the graph of the relation to:
A. list the ordered pairs of the relation
B. find the domain of the relation
C. find the range of the relation.
