What is HOMEOSTASIS?

FEEDBACK MECHANISM
From the Greek word HOMIO
“similar” and STASIS “standing
still.

To maintain the dynamic

equilibrium in the body

DYNAMIC – means
CHANGE
EQUILIBRIUM – means
EQUAL

FEEDBACK FEEDBACK
What is FEEDBACK MECHANISM? FEEDBACK MECHANISM

A physiological regulation system in

a living body that works to return the
body to its normal internal state.

PHYSIOLOGY - deals with

the normal functions of
living organisms and their
5
Negative
Feedback
• Occurs when the output of a system acts
to oppose changes to the input of the
system.

• A thermostat is an example of a
negative feedback system.
THERMOSTAT - a device that
automatically regulates temperature

Pancreas regulates the Glucose
level by secreting two
hormones – insulin and
glucagon

The liver also helps to store the

excess glucose in form of glycogen
to be utilized later.

Glucose and Insulin Negative Feedback Loop

CYCLE 1
Lowers Blood pancreas to secrete insulin
Glucose levels

Insulin stimulates the

cells to take up glucose
from the blood.
CYCLE 2
Low Blood Glucose
Levels

(-)

Stimulated Alpha Cells in

High blood glucose levels Pancreas
and Cycle 1 continues

Glucagon is released
Glucagon stimulates liver cells to
release glucose into the blood
Glucose and Insulin Negative Feedback Loop
• Two primary Hormones
Insulin Glucagon

Lowers Blood Glucose Raises Blood Glucose

Levels Levels

The opposite actions of these two hormones, insulin and

glucagon, helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels in
the body hence maintain homeostasis of the body.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK
A positive feedback loop occurs when the output of a
system acts to enhance the changes to the input of the
system.

EXAMPLE:
CHILD BIRTH
PITUITARY GLAND
the master gland that secretes hormone/s to the target
organ

OXYTOCIN
the hormone secreted by the pituitary
gland to the uterus

Thoughts to Ponder

If we consider our body

as God’s temple, let us
not abuse it hence, let
us live to our fullest
without compromising
our well-being

ASSESSMENT: FEEDBACK MECHANISM

1 – 5 Identify whether
negative or positive
feedback

21
FEEDBACK MECHANISM

1. Regulating body
temperature
2. Secretion of insulin and
glucagon
3. Lactation/ secretion of
milk
22
FEEDBACK MECHANISM

4. Controllong water levels

in the body

5. Child birth
