Acceleration 2021

The document explains the concept of acceleration as the change in velocity over time, measured in m/s/s. It distinguishes between positive acceleration (speeding up) and negative acceleration (slowing down), providing examples and calculations for each. Additionally, it includes practice questions to reinforce understanding of acceleration in various scenarios.

Acceleration
• Acceleration is the change in velocity per unit time.

• Acceleration =
Final velocity –starting velocity
Time taken for the change
• This equation refers only to a change in speed, It is measured in m/s/s
not direction.
What is changing in each picture? What remained the same?
Positive and negative acceleration

Positive acceleration Negative acceleration

When an object speeds up When an object slows down
Its final velocity is greater than its The initial velocity is greater than its
initial velocity final velocity.

It has positive acceleration. It has negative acceleration, or

down the
ramp.
A man running for a bus
speeds up from 1m/s to
5m/s in 2 seconds. What is
his acceleration?

= 5m/s – 1m/s
• Acceleration = Final velocity – starting
velocity
• Time 2s
taken for the change= 4m/s

2s
= 2m/s/s
• In 10 seconds a cheetah changes her speed
from 5m/s to 10m/s. What is her acceleration?

• Acceleration = Final velocity – starting velocity

Time taken for the change

= 10m/s – 5m/s
10s
= 5m/s
10s
= 0.5 m/s/s
A Bomb bird accelerates
from 1 m/s to 15 m/s in 1
second East.

What was its acceleration?

• Question:
• Write whether the following statements are
true or false:
1. If you slow down on your bicycle, you
Let’s accelerate.
2. If you ride your bicycle at a constant speed, you
Practice cannot accelerate.
3. Changing the speed and changing the direction
of your bicycle are both examples of
acceleration.
• Answer: 1- true, 2- false, 3- true.
