Reader’s Response
◦a literary criticism in which the readers play an active role in
evaluating a literary work. This is a kind of literary criticism
where a critic judges, evaluates, and interprets a literary work
on the basis of his own personal reaction of the text in
connection with his own experiences, and how he /she relates
or connects it with the text.
◦ Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate and interpret the text on the basis of their
personal experience, previous knowledge, and opinion.

GUIDE QUESTIONS IN CRITICIZING A TEXT USING READER – RESPONSE THEORY

1. What does the text have to do with you personally and your life: past, present and future

2. How much does the text agree with you or clash with your view of the world, and what you
consider right or wrong?
Ex: "The ones that love us never really leave us." – J.K. Rowling
3. To what extent where your views challenged/changed by this text?
Ex: The line "In my dreams, I'll always see you soar above the sky" made me think about how
memories of loved ones can inspire and guide us rather than just make us grieve.

4. How well does this text address things which you consider important?
Ex: "I'll keep a part of you with me, and everywhere I am, there you'll be," "For all the times I was
afraid, you were there to comfort me"

5. Critique the text

6. How well did you enjoy(or not) the text as an entertainment or a work of art?

7. What is your overall reaction to the text?
