Key Learning Theories and ICT Integration

The presentation discusses key learning theories and their integration with ICT in education, highlighting behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, social constructivism, and connectivism. It outlines practical applications of these theories, challenges in ICT integration, and best practices for effective implementation. Additionally, it introduces the SAMR model and TPACK framework as tools for enhancing technology use in teaching and learning.

Key Learning Theories

and ICT Integration

This presentation explores key learning theories. It examines their impact
on education and explores the relationship between theory and
technology. Practical applications and examples of ICT integration are
given.
Behaviorism and ICT
Core Principles Relevance to ICT
• Stimulus-response • Programmed instruction software
• Reinforcement • Online quizzes with immediate feedback
• Observable behavior • Gamified learning platforms

Behaviorism focuses on observable behaviors shaped by external stimuli. ICT tools provide
immediate reinforcement. Khan Academy uses mastery-based learning.
Cognitivism and ICT
Core Principles
• Mental processes
• Knowledge representation
• Information processing

Relevance to ICT
• Cognitive tutoring systems
• Simulations and virtual environments
• Mind mapping tools

Cognitivism emphasizes mental processes and

knowledge representation. ICT provides simulations
for learning. PhET simulations explore science.
Constructivism and ICT

Active Learning Knowledge Construction Social Interaction

Constructivism emphasizes active learning and knowledge construction. ICT enables online projects and
wikis. Students create presentations using online sources.
Social Constructivism and
1 Learning as Social 2 Knowledge Co-
Construction

3 Cultural Context

Learning occurs through social interaction and knowledge

sharing. Online platforms foster peer learning. Mentoring
programs use video conferencing.
Connectivism and ICT

Learning as network formation Continuous learning Diverse opinions

Connectivism sees learning as network formation and knowledge residing in networks. Students share
resources using Pinterest.
Applying Learning Theori
1 Math Facts
Behaviorist approach: drills

2 Physics Problems
Cognitivist approach: simulations

3 Community Project
Constructivist approach: platform

Different theories apply to different scenarios. Behaviorism

helps teach basic math facts. Cognitivism helps with complex
problems.
Challenges of ICT Integration

2 Teacher Training

Digital Divide

Pedagogical Alignment
3

ICT integration faces challenges such as the digital divide. Teacher training is essential. Ensure
pedagogical alignment.

Teacher Support

Begin with clear learning goals. ICT tools must align. Foster a
culture of innovation.
WHAT IS (SAMR)
Model?
Substitution, Augmentation,
Modification and Redefinition
(SAMR) Model
The SAMR Model is a four-level taxonomy
that describes how technology impacts
teaching and learning. The SAMR model can
be used to design, implement, and evaluate
learning experiences (Arantes, 2022).
WHAT IS
TPACK?
TPACK: Technological Pedagogical
Content Knowledge Framework
Technology has become an increasingly important part of students’ lives
beyond school, and even within the classroom it can also help increase
their understanding of complex concepts or encourage collaboration
among peers. Because of these benefits, current educational practice
suggests that teachers implement some form of
technology in their classrooms – but many teachers face difficulties in
doing so. Cost, access, and time often form considerable barriers to
classroom implementation, but another obstacle is a lack of knowledge
regarding how technology can best be used to benefit students across
diverse subject matter.
