Erin Haynes, DrPH, MS, Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health, College of Public Health, University of Kentucky. She is joined by a strong scientific team and a Community Advisory Board that provides insight into the research needs of the community and best outreach and communication strategies.
This study tracks the long-term health of all participants. Health conditions and symptoms will be mapped to look for ‘hot spots’ and trends over time.
Everyone who is 18 years or older and live in Columbiana, Mahoning or Jefferson Counties in Ohio; or Lawrence and Beaver in Pennsylvania; or Hancock in West Virginia is encouraged to participate. Everyone is invited to participate even if they are not currently experiencing any health symptoms.
Enrolling now will enable our team to identify changes in health over time and allow participants to receive new information as it becomes available, including new research opportunities.
Participants will be asked to:
complete short surveys about their experiences, symptoms, and health conditions;
may be invited to participate in exploratory studies to measure chemicals found in their air and body, and to join a focus group to discuss their experiences, concerns, and recommendations.
Participants receive updates about study findings and new related information as it becomes available. Participants are eligible to take part in the smaller sub-studies as we explore potential impacts of the derailment. Individual and group-level results are provided back to all participants. All survey participants are enrolled in raffles for $100 gift cards.
This research is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
