OUR TEAM OF
EXPERTS

Neurologists and neurosurgeons specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders that affect the nervous system. The nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and ganglia, serves as the main communication system of the body. It is responsible for memory, thought, learning and the regulation of various internal functions, such as heartbeat and digestion.

Neurologists are medical doctors who provide nonsurgical treatments to injuries and conditions affecting the nervous system. Using information from advanced diagnostic tests such as CAT scans, MRI and electroencephalograms, to determine if neurological issues are present. Neurologists can manage long-term and short-term neurological issues with a variety of medications and therapies. If a condition requires surgery, the neurologist will refer the patient to a neurosurgeon at Kentucky Neuroscience Institute.

Neurosurgeons also use high-tech imaging equipment to diagnose neurological conditions, whether they’re caused by an illness, an injury or a birth defect. While these medical doctors can and do recommend nonsurgical treatments to patients, they specialize in surgery and some advanced nonsurgical treatment for conditions of the nervous system. After surgery, a neurosurgeon may refer the patient back to Kentucky Neuroscience Institute neurologist for long-term management.
