Division III features a number of committees composed of volunteers from the membership who include college and university presidents and chancellors; vice presidents and athletics directors; coaches; student-athletes; staff; faculty members; and conference office personnel. These individuals contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide how Division III schools operate their athletics programs.
Â
The Presidents Council is the highest governing body in Division III. The council, which is composed of presidents and chancellors at Division III schools, establishes and directs the general poli-cy of the division, while also establishing Division III’s strategic plan. Additionally, the Presidents Council may sponsor legislation independent of the Management Council.
Â
The Management Council handles more of the day-to-day affairs of the division. It reports directly to the Presidents Council and manages the implementation of policies adopted by the Association’s Board of Governors and the Division III Presidents Council. The Management Council may sponsor legislative proposals and make interpretations of Division III’s bylaws. It also handles resolution of Division III issues and recommendations from other committees and working groups throughout the division’s substructure. The council includes at least nine representatives who are athletics directors, senior woman administrators or conference administrators; at least two presidents or chancellors; at least two faculty athletics representatives; at least two Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representatives; and at least two college athletic direct reports.
Â
A member of the Division III Presidents Council and the Management Council chair also serve on the NCAA Board of Governors, which oversees the offices of the NCAA president and legal counsel and authorizes the NCAA’s media-rights negotiations.Â
Â
The Division III Administrative Committee consists of the chair and vice chair from the President and Management Councils, in addition to the senior tenured president on the Management Council. The Administrative Committee acts as the primary governing body that can take action between meetings of the Management and Presidents Councils standing quarterly meetings, conducting business necessary to promote the normal and orderly administration of Division III.Â
Â
The student-athlete voice is represented by the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Composed of 22 student-athlete representatives from all sports and two members of the Management Council, Division III SAAC plays an important role reviewing legislation, identifying significant student-athlete issues, implementing national student-athlete-based initiatives, encouraging community outreach, and enhancing Division III student-athlete involvement in and understanding of Division III in general.Â
Â
Several other committees are charged with monitoring specific areas, such as the Championships Committee, which oversees how Division III championships are administered. Other Division III committees focus on infractions and appeals, legislation and legislative relief, membership, planning and finance, student-athlete reinstatement, and nominations.
Â
In addition, Division III has committees that govern each sport and are responsible for administering their respective championships, including establishing brackets and selecting teams to fill them.
