The average date for the first measurable snow (0.1 inches) at the major climate sites ranges from late October in Caribou, ME, to late December in Atlantic City, NJ. By December 7, fifteen major climate sites typically see measurable snow. So far this year, ten of those sites have seen measurable snow and the other five are stilling waiting.

The first inch of snow typically arrives a little later in the season, anywhere from early November in Caribou, ME, to early January at New York City’s airports and in Atlantic City, NJ. By December 7, eleven major climate sites typically see their first inch of snow. So far this year, seven of those sites have seen their first inch of snow and the other three are stilling waiting.

It’s looking more likely that cities along the Interstate 95 corridor such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and Portland could see measurable snow, if not their first inch (or more) of snow, this weekend. For some sites, this would be earlier than usual. NOAA’s National Weather Service and Weather Prediction Centers indicate a storm moving off the coast could drop several inches of snow on these areas.
