Inside the Macfarlane Art Studio (artist N.L. Abell)

Thanks to the generosity of a donor, FHL offers several Artist in Residence (AIR) fellowships per year. We invite visual artists to work on projects at FHL that have a notable connection to marine sciences and/or the environment, and to be part of the community of marine science students and researchers living and working on campus.

In exchange for covering a large part of their expenses, during their residency Fellows are asked to contribute to the local community in some manner. This could manifest in any number of ways, including offering drawing lessons to students, creating art that FHL can use in marketing efforts, giving lecture demonstrations about their work and process, or other creative ideas.

Fellowships are available for the months of October through May, but not in the summer.

AIR recipients may request a residency for a duration of one to three months, and will have exclusive use of the Macfarlane Art Studio throughout their stay. The studio, roughly 15 x 25 feet, is heated and well lighted with natural and spectrum-balanced electric light. It is currently equipped with easels, drying racks, a sink, tables, adjustable chairs, and display boards.

AIR recipients will receive honoraria toward travel expenses and residency food costs. AIR recipients will be housed in either a Whiteley cottage or another residence unit on the FHL campus, at no charge. Please note that because FHL is a biological preserve, no pets are allowed on campus.

May 1 is the application deadline for fellowship residencies taking place October through February.

December 1 is the application deadline for fellowship residencies taking place March through May.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee, and fellowship recipients notified no later than three months from the requested start of their residency, to allow for planning. Fellow agrees to commit to the residency time period within two weeks of acceptance.

Application requirements include:

  • A short statement (roughly between 100 and 1000 words) about what the artist plans to work on, and why their project is appropriately targeted to FHL;
  • A short statement about how the artist envisions contributing to the FHL community;
  • A link to the artist’s portfolio.
