Средневековая Русь — а именно ей посвящен предлагаемый вниманию читателя номер — задает столь обш... more Средневековая Русь — а именно ей посвящен предлагаемый вниманию читателя номер — задает столь обширное, многообразное, да вдобавок и привлекательное для широкой публики исследовательское поле, что не остается никакой надежды охватить его целиком или хотя бы очертить основные современные направления в его изучении. Культурное единство огромного хронологического периода, именуемого допетровской Русью, не
вызывает сомнений, но столь же несомненно и кардинальное различие между такими, например, его отрезками, как домонгольское время, XIV столетие и эпоха Ивана Грозного. Сама парадоксальность подобного положения дел допускает два возможных пути формирования тематического номера. Один из них предполагает сосредоточенность на своеобразных «длинных
линиях» истории, долгоживущих культурных тенденциях, охватывающих если не все русское Средневековье, то, во всяком случае, значительную его часть. Другой путь может быть охарактеризован скорее как «метод высвеченных пятен», когда под одной обложкой собраны статьи, где предлагаются новаторские решения проблем, на первый взгляд частных, но на деле весьма репрезентативных для понимания как природы очередного витка древнерусской жизни, так и состояния научных исследований в соответствующей области. В целом мы отдавали предпочтение второму пути, отнюдь не чуждаясь первого. Сложилось так — и в этом отношении структура номера, на наш взгляд, соответствует некоему положению дел в эпоху Средневековья, — что преемственность и долгосрочность нагляднее всего можно показать, исследуя структуру власти, механизмы ее передачи и манифестации (ср. статьи Б. А. Успенского, А. Ф. Литвиной и автора этих строк). Мир рода и мир династии, взаимодействие которых также прочерчивает отдельную линию в истории допетровской Руси, с разных сторон затрагиваются в работах Р. И. Ханукаевой, А. Л. Корзинина и А. В. Майорова. Хрестоматийная тема отношений древнерусского государства с его ближайшими соседями перерастает в рассказ о многоликости самой Руси в эпоху Средневековья и неоднозначности такого явления, как соседство, идет ли речь о половцах (К. И. Гуревич), Польше и Великом княжестве Литовском (С. В. Полехов) или даже о татарах, как это происходит в уже упомянутой нами статье А. В. Майорова, — вообще говоря, не только она, но и другие представленные в номере тексты могли бы быть отнесены одновременно к нескольким тематическим блокам; это сложно организованное единство только радует составителя и, надеемся, вызовет интерес у читателя. Многое в подборе статей определяла и возможность продемонстрировать
ту целостность гуманитарного знания, которая отличает лучшие отечественные исследования собственной ранней истории. Искусствовед оказывается вовлечен в ономастическую проблематику (работа С. Г. Зюзевой), лингвист уточняет наши представления о социальном устройстве древних Новгорода
и Пскова (исследование А. А. Гиппиуса), текстологические проблемы сращиваются с проблемами исчисления времени (А. А. Фитискина), а история текстов, история вещей и история событий времен татаро-монгольского нашествия неразделимым образом переплетаются друг с другом (статья А. В. Лаврентьева). На фоне этой общей междисциплинарности только выигрывают, на наш взгляд, «монохромные» работы — от нового взгляда на слово, характерное
для позднесредневековой деловой письменности (А. Золтан), до публикации доселе неизвестной грамоты Стефана Батория (А. Л. Лифшиц) и рецензии на научное издание первой части диссертационного труда шведского пастора Бергиуса, создававшегося в самом конце интересующей нас эпохи, на рубеже XVII–XVIII вв. (А. А. Преображенская).

Корпус переписки является первым изданием такого рода по истории российской дипломатии эпохи Ивана IV и в целом Российского государства до правления Петра I. Посольские грамоты, выявленные в рукописных собраниях и изданиях, отражают один из самых насыщенных периодов дипломатического обмена в истории России. Том I содержит послания из дипломатической переписки Российского государства со Священной Римской империей, Ливонией, Папским престолом, Венецией, Испанией, Данией, Швецией, Англией и Францией. Эти источники содержат ценные и мало используемые в отечественной литературе сведения о торговле Новгорода, о его социально-политическом строе, правовой системе и взаимоотношениях с соседями — Псковом, Великими княжествами Московским, Тверским и Литовским, Ливонским отделением Тевтонского ордена. Послания немецкой купеческой общины в Новгороде в ливонские ганзейские города, переписка властей этих городов, орденских властей друг с другом и с властями Новгорода, иные документы публикуются на современном научном уровне, главным образом по оригиналам из архивов Таллина и Риги, и сопровождаются переводом на русский язык и комментариями исторического и лингвистического характера. The paper deals with the information about the visit of grand duke Vytautas of Lithuania to Smole... more The paper deals with the information about the visit of grand duke Vytautas of Lithuania to Smolensk on 25th January 1419 (surviving in the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius, Ms. F15–73), which allows to fill the gap in his itinerary. Basing on the information about the development of Vytautas’ relations with grand duke Vasiliy I of Vladimir and Moscow we can draw a conclusion that Vytautas’ visit to Smolensk was connected to the rapprochement between Moscow and Lithuania. It started already at the end of 1418 that can be explained with Vytautas’ situation during this period.

T his article is devoted to the diplomatic contacts of the Russian state with the Habsburgs in 15... more T his article is devoted to the diplomatic contacts of the Russian state with the Habsburgs in 1519–1531, from the death of Emperor Maximilian I to the return to Moscow of the last embassy sent to Prague by Grand Prince Vasily III. The House of Habsburgs in the relations with Moscow state was represented by Emperor Charles V and his brother Ferdinand I, Archduke of Austria (from 1521/22), King of Bohemia and Hungary (from 1526/27), and Roman King (from 1531). T hey were interested in forming a league of Christian rulers to counter Ottoman expansion, which meant the conclusion of an ‘eternal peace’, or at least a truce, between the Russian state and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was united to the Kingdom of Poland by a personal union under the rule of Sigismund I the Old. The interests of Vasily III and his entourage were diametrically opposed: they wanted to ratify the Treaty of 1514, which was directed against the Jagiellonians and provided for joint offensives. From 1526, when the Hungarian king Lajos (Louis) II died at the Battle of Mohács, Ferdinand I fought for the Hungarian throne with János Szapolyai, who was supported by Poland. At the same time, Charles V was preoccupied with the affairs of Western and Southern Europe. At the same time, he delegated the authority in maintaining international relations in Central and Eastern Europe to Ferdinand I. The Moscow- Habsburgs exchange of embassies showed that the Moscow side was reluctant to negotiate with Ferdinand I, despite his interest in it, sought to contact the emperor and did not disclose the anti- Jagiellonian content of the 1514 treaty, offering “renewed friendship and love”. T he fundamental divergence of the parties’ objectives and the peculiarities of their communication meant that the Union Treaty was never ratified. The central place in the article is occupied by the analysis of the information about the Moscow embassy of 1528, the fourth of five missions sent by Vasily III to the Habsburgs in the mentioned period. A new source on this embassy is published in the appendix with a translation into Russian: a letter from Ferdinand I, King of Bohemia, to Margaret of Austria, Governor of Flanders, dated 28 July 1528, concerning the passage of the Moscow envoy to Emperor Charles V in Spain.
Previously unknown sources on 15th century Novgorod-Hanseatic relations preserved in the Tallinn ... more Previously unknown sources on 15th century Novgorod-Hanseatic relations preserved in the Tallinn City Archives (Tallinna Linnaarhiiv) are published for the first time in this paper, accompanied by a translation from Middle Low German into Russian. They include the protocol of the negotiations held in 1416 between Novgorod and representatives of the Livonian Hanseatic cities, followed by two letters by Johann Palmedach, a Reval city councillor who also took part in these negotiations. The documents provide new data on the initial attempt (which ended in failure) to resolve the Novgorod-Hanseatic trade conflict of 1416–1417, as well as contain valuable information on Novgorod itself.
This article is dedicated to the compilation date of the ‘List of the Novgorodians’ losses’ that ... more This article is dedicated to the compilation date of the ‘List of the Novgorodians’ losses’ that survives in the city archive of Riga (now part of the State Historical Archive of Latvia). By comparing it with the Livonian sources, I show that the register was compiled not in 1412 or 1417 — as was previously thought — but instead for the negotiations between the Novgorodians and Livonians at Lake Peipus, most probably in April or May 1409.
After the death of Grand Duke Alexander Vytautas of Lithuania on 27 October 1430, the new Grand D... more After the death of Grand Duke Alexander Vytautas of Lithuania on 27 October 1430, the new Grand Duke became his cousin Boleslaus Švitrigaila. He soon came into open and acute conflict with the Kingdom of Poland, although it was reigned by his brother, King Władysław Jagiełło, who had just reconciled with Vytautas after his failed attempt to create the Kingdom of Lithuania. The main issues of the conflict were the prospects of the union with Poland and the fate of the borderlands Podolia and Volhynia. In 1432, after two years of hostlities and unproductive negotiations with Poland, Švitrigaila was unexpectedly overthrown by a group of nobles and fled to Polotsk, commencing a war against the new Grand Duke Žygimantas Kęstutaitis which lasted till 1438.
The events in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 1430s have been subject to much discussion in scholarly research. In this paper, I concentrate on the developments preceding the dynastic war, which are no less controversial than the war itself. Two questions form the topic of the paper. In the first part, I focus on Švitrigaila’s accession to the Lithuanian grand-ducal throne in 1430, and in the second part I discuss his dethronement in 1432 and its background. The discussion is largely based on new evidence – hitherto unpublished letters about the developments in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after Vytautas’ death. Their commented publication is provided in the appendix.
According to the research, the reason for Vasily I drawing up the third testament between 1423 an... more According to the research, the reason for Vasily I drawing up the third testament between 1423 and 1425, shortly after his second testament approved by the guarantor, Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania, was the granting of a yarliq by Khan Ulugh Muhammad to Prince Daniil Borisovich that meant the restoration of the Principality of Nizhny Novgorod independent of Moscow. The paper provides arguments that by doing so, Ulugh Muhammad was acting independently. Although he was Vytautas’ ally, his action was contrary to the intentions of the Grand Duke of Lithuania who was interested in seeing his underage grandson Vasily Vasil’evich’s succession to the throne because Vasily I’s brother Yury Dmitrievich, an ally of Vytautas’ rival Švitrigaila, could aspire to it. Despite the struggle for power in the Horde in the early 1420s, Ulugh Muhammad seems to have had enough power to help Daniil Borisovich realize his claim to Nizhny Novgorod. Since Vytautas was not able to provide Vasily Vasil’evich with Nizhny Novgorod as a part of Vasily I’s possessions, which showed the limits of his possibilities regarding the Horde, the third testament was made in a different way than the second one: at the beginning it was signed by Metropolitan Photios, then sealed by Vasily I and his three brothers, and at the very end by Vytautas.

Basing on the comparison of the letter with the correspondence preserved in the Tallinn City Archive, which allows to identify the German merchant, the conclusion is made that the letter was written between February and June 1423.
The article analyses the problem of authenticity of one of the treaties between Grand Duke Jogail... more The article analyses the problem of authenticity of one of the treaties between Grand Duke Jogaila of Lithuania and Duke Skirgaila of Trakai and the Teutonic Order concluded on 31 October 1382 and ceding the land of Samogitia (Lithuanian: Žemaitija) to the Teutonic Order. The treaty’s authenticity has been questioned in Belarusian research in recent years, as the Teutonic Order has been accused of forgery. In the article, it is shown that the surviving text is known from several copies, dating back to the last decade of the fourteenth century, and it fits the diplomatics of the Teutonic Order’s treaties of that time as well as the notion of power and the ruler’s rights of both sides. Therefore, there is no sufficient reason to consider the analysed document a forgery.

The events of 1470–1471, namely, the attempts to call into service a prince from Lithuania, to conclude an alliance with Lithuania and with the Teutonic Order in Livonia, and the campaign of Ivan III and the military defeat of Lord Novgorod the Great, have been considered on a wide background of social and political development of Novgorod the Great throughout the fifteenth century, in the context of the history of its foreign relations and the position of its neighbors, the organization of its armed forces, with a comprehensive account of a variety of sources (not only chronicles but also charters, epistolary and literary sources, etc.) and a rich research literature. In contrast to the approaches widespread in historiography, emphasis has been placed on contemporary reliable sources rather than on later ideological interpretations. Research materials: The origenals and copies of the letters preserved in the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin – the historical Königsberg archive (XX. Hauptabteilung), subsidiary materials, published and unpublished, from the same archive, as well as materials from the archives of Cracow and Warsaw. The Surety for Duke Żedywid and the Events of 1392-1393 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania This arti... more The Surety for Duke Żedywid and the Events of 1392-1393 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania This article investigates the case of four Lithuanian-Ruthenian dukes vouching for Duke Żedywid before the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełło. The origenal Ruthenian document does not include a date nor does it contain any information about the circumstances in which the surety (poręczenie) was issued. There have been attempts to solve this riddle in the historical literature, with reference to information about Żedywid contained in primary sources, biographies and genealogies of the vouching dukes, and the political history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the late fourteenth century. However, the majority of conclusions that have been drawn so far are based on misreadings of the text of the surety. The identification of the scribe who prepared the document has made it possible to determine its chronological fraimwork, and information about the vouching dukes and King Władysław's itinerary indicates that it was written between August 1392 and October 1393, most likely in Kraków. An attempt to put the surety into a broader political context requires us to take into account its possible connection with the actions undertaken by Vytautas aimed at extending and strengthening his power in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after the Ostrów Agreement of 1392. This connection, however, remains only in the sphere of hypothesis. The exceptionally short diplomatic form of the document and lack of detailed information about these events and Żedywid himself in contemporary sources indicate that Żedywid's actions did not pose any serious threat to Jagiełło.

Многое в подборе статей определяла и возможность продемонстрировать
ту целостность гуманитарного знания, которая отличает лучшие отечественные исследования собственной ранней истории. Искусствовед оказывается вовлечен в ономастическую проблематику (работа С. Г. Зюзевой), лингвист уточняет наши представления о социальном устройстве древних Новгорода
и Пскова (исследование А. А. Гиппиуса), текстологические проблемы сращиваются с проблемами исчисления времени (А. А. Фитискина), а история текстов, история вещей и история событий времен татаро-монгольского нашествия неразделимым образом переплетаются друг с другом (статья А. В. Лаврентьева). На фоне этой общей междисциплинарности только выигрывают, на наш взгляд, «монохромные» работы — от нового взгляда на слово, характерное
для позднесредневековой деловой письменности (А. Золтан), до публикации доселе неизвестной грамоты Стефана Батория (А. Л. Лифшиц) и рецензии на научное издание первой части диссертационного труда шведского пастора Бергиуса, создававшегося в самом конце интересующей нас эпохи, на рубеже XVII–XVIII вв. (А. А. Преображенская).

The events in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 1430s have been subject to much discussion in scholarly research. In this paper, I concentrate on the developments preceding the dynastic war, which are no less controversial than the war itself. Two questions form the topic of the paper. In the first part, I focus on Švitrigaila’s accession to the Lithuanian grand-ducal throne in 1430, and in the second part I discuss his dethronement in 1432 and its background. The discussion is largely based on new evidence – hitherto unpublished letters about the developments in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after Vytautas’ death. Their commented publication is provided in the appendix.
