Organ Failure & Transplant Network

The UK Organ Failure and Transplant Network (OFTN) is a relationship-based program developed to provide definitive care for patients with advanced organ failure. We encourage physicians throughout Kentucky and surrounding states to refer patients with advanced kidney, heart, lung, liver and pancreatic disease for care when local options have been exhausted.

While organ transplantation may be one option, other treatment options – including mechanical support (ventricular assist devices and ECMO) and regenerative medicine clinical trials (stem cells) – also may be available. Our goal is to work with referring physicians and community hospitals to provide as much local care as possible and offer resources for advanced care at UK HealthCare when local care is no longer appropriate.

The goals and objectives of the Organ Failure and Transplant Network are as follows:

  1. To enhance a sense of ownership of the organ failure and transplantation management for all parties involved.
  2. To facilitate patient referral and evaluation in a timely, efficient manner.
  3. To develop and foster relationships through clinical and educational outreach with a focus on the referring providers’ needs and expectations.
  4. To develop new competencies among local partnering physicians and hospitals through continuing education opportunities.

We want to collaborate with physicians who are interested in owning the process of organ failure management from initial evaluation to transplantation. We strive to excel among other regional centers by incorporating physician ownership, communication and education into our program. Members of the Network may apply to our UK community faculty program, have electronic access to their patient’s information though the UK Organ Transplant Tracking Record (OTTR), receive opportunities for continuing medical education, engage in co-branding initiatives, and participate in the transplant center’s unique mini-fellowship program.
