Writing-for-publication is a practice that doctoral students should acquire for integration into international research culture. Publication rates and forms of pedagogy supporting the development of publication skills for doctoral students, however, remain inadequate worldwide. Limited data of doctoral student publication from African universities is available in terms of publication patterns and pedagogies. To gain insight into publication pedagogies, a top-publishing science department at a leading African university was studied. A literature search was performed to find journal articles linked to dissertations and the numbers and timing of publication were documented. Supervisors and graduates from the sample were interviewed to uncover educational strategies employed to support doctoral student publication. This study aimed at elaborating barriers to publication perceived by doctoral (Ph.D.) students from Malaysian universities. We interviewed 7 Ph.D. students from 3 Malaysian universities. Besides, we also distributed a survey instrument to 125 participants who attended doctoral programs in 12 Malaysian universities. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Meanwhile, descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA were applied for the survey data analysis. Findings revealed some external barriers such as lack of funding for publication fee, lack of funding for professional translators, a response time of the reviewers, negative results of the review, and difficulties in coordinating with coauthors. Internal barriers like limited skills in English, lack of time to write, limited writing skills, and limited skills in submission process were also reported.

Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this work is to develop more nuanced understandings of the PhD by publication, particularly raising awareness of the retrospective PhD by publication. The article aims to contribute to contemporary debates about the differing pathways to the attainment of doctoral study completion and the artifacts submitted for that purpose. It also seeks to support prospective graduate students and supervisors who are embarking upon alternative routes to doctoral accreditation. Background: The PhD is considered the pinnacle of academic study – highly cherished, and replete with deeply held beliefs. In response to changes in job markets, developments in the disciplines, and more varied student cohorts, diverse pathways to completion of this award have emerged, such as the PhD by publication (PhDP). A PhDP may either be prospective or retrospective. For the former, publications are planned and created with their contributions to the PhDP in mind. The retrospective PhD is ...

This editorial outlines the growing pressure on PhD students (emerging scholars) to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as some of these scholars' writing for publication challenges in the field of Education. The editor suggests how the Canadian Journal for New Scholars in Education (CJNSE) attempts to mitigate these writing for publication challenges through its mentored peer review process, and provides some suggestions to emerging scholars for overcoming these challenges.
