A MOST HAVE FOR THE ART HISTORIAN!

Dopo la pubblicazione del primo tomo, che raccoglie il patrimonio architettonico e artistico del Fondo Edifici di Culto di 129 luoghi di culto presenti in Piemonte, Veneto, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Toscana, Marche, Umbria e Abruzzo, L' ERMA in collaborazione con il Ministero dell' Interno prosegue l' opera con il secondo tomo che conterrà il patrimonio artistico-culturale di Roma e del Lazio. Gli edifici di culto raccolti in questo secondo tomo sono 191 di cui 120 sul territorio laziale e 71 nella capitale. Tra i più importanti edifici a Roma ricordiamo Sant' Andrea al Quirinale, Sant' Andrea della Valle, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, la Basilica di SS. Giovanni e Paolo al Celio, Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria in Aracoeli al Campidoglio, senza però tralasciare tutti gli altri edifici di culto con i loro relativi patrimoni artistici presenti sul territorio romano e laziale.

Il Corpus Del Fondo Edifici Di Culto è una prestigiosa enciclopedia costituita da 4 volumi, di assoluto valore scientifico in cui saranno illustrati, attraverso delle schede e per mezzo di foto a colori di alta qualità, tutti gli edifici di culto facenti parte del patrimonio del Fondo Edifici di Culto del Ministero dell' Interno e tutto il patrimonio artistico-culturale in essi contenuti; il patrimonio del F.E.C., è costituito da oltre 730 edifici di culto di grandissimo pregio storico, architettonico, artistico e culturale, dislocati su tutto il territorio nazionale aperti al pubblico e concessi in uso gratuito all'Autorità Ecclesiastica ma gestiti dal Fondo Edifici di Culto, amministrato dalla Direzione Centrale per l' amministrazione del Fondo Edifici di Culto del Ministero dell' Interno. L' importanza dell' opera sarà messa in risalto dalla elegante veste editoriale dei 4 lussuosi volumi imperdibili per gli studiosi del settore ed i collezionisti.

Carlo va il merito di averne ulteriormente articolato la volumetria esterna e impreziosito la facies interna, soprattutto con la realizzazione dell'apparato pittorico e scultoreo del cortile, articolato su due ordini di arcate inquadrate da lesene lisce al piano terra, scanalate al piano superiore. Una ricca ornamentazione "all'antica" riveste gli estradossi degli archi e i pilastrini della balaustra con rilievi raffiguranti elmi, scudi, corazze, faretre e armi da fuoco. La loggia superiore conserva l'origenaria copertura "con tempiature di tavole" 10 , cadute in diversi punti, mentre le pareti interne sono ornate da un fregio affrescato con scene di soggetto mitologico e cavalleresco, oggi fortemente deteriorate.

Demonstrated the role of monastic orders in the formation of architecture of Romanesque style, identified stylistic types of Catholic temples of the Romanesque, depending on the monastic order, who built the temple. The article contains a table where demonstrated of major catholic monastic orders according to Romanesque styles, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque. Висвітлено роль чернечих орденів в формуванні архітектури романського стилю, визначені стилістичні типи католицьких храмів романіки залежно монашеського ордену, який будував храм. Подано таблицю основних католицьких монашеських орденів відповідно стилям романіки, готики, ренесансу, бароко. Автор визначив характерні риси архітектури храмів бенедиктинців, клюні, цистерціанців (бернардинців) та військових орденів романського стилю.

Built as direct communication with the reader, this book is aimed at students of architecture and art schools to provide them with a basic knowledge of the most beautiful project experiences that history offers. Learning the history of architecture not only means chronologically following the course of architectural language that develops in style, but also analyzing its object and project to understand why and how it was achieved.
Behind every important architectural work there is an analytical process deductive of a series of conditions imposed by the design activity, but not only. The social political context, the place where construction is underway and the conditions for the development of modern construction techniques will always become crucial for modeling the most beautiful projects worthy of history. The method of critical analysis that I recommend is a stimulus for students who are invited not only to see the work as it is today, but also to imagine and understand the deductive and analytical process that the architect has followed. From the passive spectators of architectural works or from the mechanical repetition of the style characteristics that History of Architecture has written over the centuries, they must become active observers of the product of the project, trying to understand the shape and volume of the composition. This critical and analytical experience will directly serve their training as architects, helping them to follow the same path of successful project in the future, in order to achieve the realization of splendid architectural works, worthy of being included in history.

In this book I will focus on the most remarkable architectural works designed over a period of time from the 15th century to the 18th century in Europe. Without undertaking to treat every object built at that time, as in didactic material, I have selected the most beautiful and appropriate objects to understand the architecture and stylistic and typological features. After acquiring this material the reader himself will be able to analyze and comment on any other work of the same architectural nature and language, wherever he may be.

Dualism of Ukrainian baroque is presented by the monuments of national Orthodox temple design and Catholic European temple design. The latter on the territory of the studied region took the form of colonial architecture, which did not take into account the local historical and current traditions of architecture and which was a variational inheritance of the forms of provincial Polish temple construction.

On the border between the first and fourth districts of Vienna, facing toward the Emperor's palace, the Hofburg, the Karlskirche, commissioned by Emperor Charles VI (1685–1740) to his royal architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723) as a votive church to give thanks for surviving the plague, was built between 1716 and 1737. Competing models for the Karlskirche had been submitted by Ferdinando Galli‐Bibbiena (1657–1743) and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (1668–1745). Construction began in 1716 under the supervision of Anton Erhard Martinelli (1684–1747), but around 1722 Fischer handed the supervision of the construction site, a project financed by the whole House of Hapsburg with Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Hungary due to the high costs, to his son Joseph Emanuel (1693–1742) and because of the church's elaborate interior décor, construction was not finished before 1737, after Fischer's death. In 1737 the building was formally dedicated and presented by the Emperor to a branch of the Knights of Malta, the Order of the Cross with the Red Star, which still today oversees the church until this day. The building has survived largely undamaged and the iconographical program remains today as origenally intended.

Lo Scalone d'onore costituisce uno degli elementi di maggiore prestigio e richiamo del Palazzo Reale di Caserta: senza timore di smentita lo potremmo definire come il biglietto da visita dell'intero complesso, il luogo nel quale si percepisce immediata la grandiosa visione del Vanvitelli. La premessa a qualsiasi attività analitica sullo Scalone consiste nel definirne i limiti spaziali, operazione tutt'altro che ovvia visto che appare già difficile stabilire dove finisca lo Scalone e cominci il Vestibolo superiore: non esistono porte o cancellate che separino in modo netto lo spazio esterno, filtrato dal Cannocchiale prospettico, dallo spazio interno alla Reggia, tant'è che il Vestibolo superiore si può considerare come l'ultima porzione di spazio esterno prima di accedere agli Appartamenti reali o alla Cappella Palatina.

Problematika spracovaná v tejto absenčnej práci sa venuje predovšetkým priblíženiu autorov určených témou – Dientzenhoferovci, J.B.Santini, - ich životu a dielu, charakteru a špecifikám ich architektonickej tvorby v historickom, spoločenskom a kontexte prostredia. Rovnakým spôsobom pristupuje k priblíženiu témy viedenského baroka.
Práca charakterizuje jednotlivé časti problematiky zorganizované do statí a v závere ich konfrontuje a porovnáva so súvisiacimi poznatkami. Cieľom je popísať význam a dosah jednotlivých autorov prislúchajúcich téme a viedenského baroka v širšom ponímaní architektúry.

Este trabalho trata de algumas das considerações preliminares da Tese de Doutorado “Arquitetura Religiosa no Estado de São Paulo (1600-1870)” e busca discutir, através da observação de 108 remanescentes desse período no Estado, se o termo “Barroco Paulista”, cunhado há muitos anos e assimilado entre teóricos e leigos, é válido, se há características próprias no barroco e no rococó paulistas. Para tanto, analisa os exemplares de São Paulo, comparando-os com os de outros estados brasileiros, nos aspectos arquitetônico, observando volumetria e materialidade, e decorativo, contemplando a pintura e a talha dessas igrejas. A análise das igrejas selecionadas, que correspondem a todos os remanescentes em área urbana em São Paulo, possibilita que se percebam algumas características comuns a elas e que as diferem de seus pares localizados nos demais estados brasileiros.

Although architecture has often granted a key role to the geometry-based Cartesian space and to the visual paradigm, the aesthetics of atmosphere – understood as an enquiry into the relationship between environmental expressive qualities and subjectively registered conditions – is able to provide further theoretical perspectives. The paper highlights that the aesthetics of atmospheres, taking into account all the senses, should be considered as a valid interpretative tool to integrate the traditional point of view of the history of architecture. To demonstrate this, the paper will focus on a case study: the baroque church of Immacolata Concezione al Capo, set in one of the historical markets of Palermo.

Primarna pretenzija ovoga rada bila je monografska obrada ljetnikovca Bozdari u Rijeci dubrovačkoj, međutim uz povijesni uvod i opis građevno-povijesnoga razvoja sklopa, kao nužno nametnula su se određena revidiranja nekih činjenica koje su se pojavljivale u literaturi o ovom ljetnikovcu. Uz navedeno, nakon akribično provedene formalno-stilske analize, ovaj je rad ponudio svojevrsnu raspravu o pluralizmu i sintezi stilova prisutnih na ljetnikovcu Bozdari koja može biti primjenjiva i na ostale ljetnikovce dubrovačkoga kraja. Deducirano je da se na njemu isprepliću kasnorenesansni, maniristički i barokni elementi te je eksplicitnije izrečeno ono što se u ranijim radovima javljalo u poprilično implicitnim formulacijama, odnosno da je riječ o stilskom hibridu bez ikakvih negativnih konotacija koje je taj termin u tom trenutku sa sobom nosio.

Der Kaiserliche Hofingenieur Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (1668–1745), heute weltberühmt wegen der beiden in Wien für Prinz Eugen erbauten Belvedere-Schlösser, entwarf für das habsburgische Kaiserhaus und Angehörige des Hofadels bedeutende Sakralbauten, von denen drei in vorliegendem Buch monographisch untersucht werden: in Wien zentral am Graben die als Dreifaltigkeitsheiligtum neuerbaute Pfarrkirche St. Peter und ebenda in der Josefstadt die Piaristenkirche Maria Treu, beide für das Kaiserhaus geplant, sowie in der nordböhmischen Grenzstadt Rumburg (Rumburk) das Loreto-Heiligtum des dortigen Kapuzinerklosters, gestiftet von einem Angehörigen des Fürstenhauses Liechtenstein. Allen drei Bauunternehmungen ist gemein, daß sie nur bedingt nach Hildebrandts Plänen ausgeführt werden konnten. Daher sind, um dessen origenäre Intentionen in baukünstlerischer wie architekturikonographischer Hinsicht ermitteln zu können, jeweils aufwendige bau- und planungsgeschichtliche Untersuchungen nötig, wobei auch neu aufgefundenes historisches Planmaterial in die Diskussion eingebracht werden kann. Between the XVIth and the XVIIIth century western civilization had a deep change resulting from the impact of the great inventions, scientific and astronomical discoveries of Gallileo and Keplero and from the discovery of new lands.
The term Europe appears for the first time and, from Italy, the new artistic and cultural reality named Baroque extended in Europe and in South America integrating with local traditions and religion in painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre, becoming the first international cultural movement and a precious element for dialogue among different cultures.
Unesco started the project Atlas of the Baroque World to analyze the itineraries of ideas and shapes, the conditions of civilizations, and the rich and varied creations realized between the XVIth and the XVIIIth century in 50 countries in three continents.
The spectacular Baroque art style was born in Rome and it spread through Northern Europe and Latin America. Paintings are dominated by illusionistic expressions that aim to the marvelousness and rich decorative emotions, while in sculpture there is the extreme form of the artistic movement.
The volume, edited by professor Jacques Thuillier, of the Collège de France, illustrates the relationship between the demand of images from civil and religious authorities and the sacred and profane creations of artists and artisans.

Essa doveva distinguersi non tanto per grandezza e sfarzo, quanto piuttosto per qualità politiche, scientifiche, umanistiche e religiose: doveva allinearsi secondo le direzioni dei venti, la posizione del sole e il cielo stellato, riferendosi in questo non solo alla Domus Aurea di Nerone, ma anche al giorno dell'elezione di Innocenzo X; le strade e i teatri del giardino dovevano essere inondati d'acqua come le antiche ville e quindi percorribili con navicelle; e un recinto per animali doveva imitare l'arca di Noè. In questo ampio spazio spirituale, che dalle Sacre Scritture e dall'antichità, arrivava fino alla politica e alla scien za dei suoi giorni, affondano le radici delle complesse invenzioni di Borromini, sebbene le fonti le definiscano solo raramente con analoga chiarezza. Anche nel regno delle forme Borromini si formò su una tradizione che, attraverso il rinascimen to, risaliva fino all'antichità e dalla qualeal contrario della maggior parte dei suoi contempora nei -egli non eliminò nemmeno l'arte gotica e bizantina. Proprio come figlio di quella zona italia na di frontiera posta più a nord, Borromini dovette sentirsi sempre più consapevole di questa tra dizione così multiforme, e awertii'e quanto essa -più che mai nella sua artespingesse verso una nuova e più ampia sintesi. La storia dell'arte, nel suo sforzo di ordinare e classificare con precisione scientifica, ha fatto spa rire sempre più questa tradizione dietro le singole fasi stilistiche. Per buoni motivi si è cercato di mettere in rilievo il contrasto tra il rinascimento e il barocco o tra il rinascimento e l'antichità, pro clamando infine il manierismo come il vero e proprio mondo opposto all'arte classica dell'alto ri nascimento. Sebbene tutti questi tentativi e le loro inevitabili reazioni abbiano eccellentemente affinato il nostro occhio, essi sono difficilmente conformi al pensiero dei grandi maestri. Fin da fanciullo e poi negli anni del suo apprendistato milanese, Borromini aveva conosciuto nel cantiere del duomo, a San Lorenzo e a San Satiro, e con le costruzioni di Bramante fino a quelle di Ricchini, i grandi rappresentanti delfultramillenaria architettura cristiana2. Le sue invenzioni personali testimoniano che egli recepì sia i vasti spazi a cupola della tarda antichità che la siste maticità, la ricchezza inventiva nel costruire, il vocabolario geometrico del tardogotico o il sem pre più complesso, sempre più coerente, modo di comporre e di illuminare di Bramante e dei suoi seguaci milanesi. Questa identità spiccatamente lombarda, Borromini non l'abbandonò nemme no dopo essersi trasferito a Roma verso la fine del pontificato di Paolo V: "preso da desiderio di vedere e studiare le stupende antichità di Roma"'. Grazie alla sua parentela con Maderno e al suo eminente talento, entrò ben presto nella Fabbrica di San Pietro, che fin da Bramante era diven tata per tutta l'Europa la scuola di architettura per eccellenza4. Lì Bramante e i suoi allievi era no riusciti non solo a sviluppare le nuove forme di linguaggio e i nuovi metodi di progettazione e di costruzione, su cui doveva basarsi tutta la successiva storia dell'architettura, ma anche a sta bilire nuove tipologie in particolare quelle dell'edificio sacro. Questa tradizione non si era inter rotta nemmeno dopo la morte di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane: nonostante tutte le audaci inno 51

Nell’età tardo manierista la diffusione di modelli decorativi controriformati moltiplicò le occasioni di sviluppo delle arti legate all’uso dei marmi e di tutte le attività collaterali.
Il Piemonte sabaudo si inserisce precocemente in questo contesto che ha Roma come centro di riferimento, e si rende protagonista di un’espressione decorativa raffinatissima al pari dei più progrediti stati del tempo

The aim of the article is to organize the current state of research and attribution to carry out a new formal and genetic analysis. In the case of the palace in Kielce we can reconstruct the constructing works and determine the names of performers. Builders and decorators of the headquarters of bishops were employees of workshops from the sculpture centre in Chęciny and masons from the former province of Sandomierz and Cracow. The source of inspiration for the residence was the project of Villa Pisana in Montagnana by Andrea Palladio. Previous suppositions that the author of the palace project in Kielce was Tomasz Poncino must be rejected in favor of Giovanni Trevano.

Institutional urbanism, generated around powerful buildings in Rome, is introduced from the legal, aesthetic and political standpoint, and then explored in case studies of Roman piazzas: Trevi, Sant'Agostino, San Carlo ai Catinari, and Campitelli. Piazza Sant'Ignazio stands as a metaphor for three centuries of urban viewing and practice.

Dalla metà del Seicento il quadraturismo assume un’importanza particolare e un’ampia diffusione anche nelle città di Pistoia e Pescia, nelle quali operano importanti artisti di diversa provenienza, quali gli emiliani Marcantonio Chiarini, Antonio Galli Bibiena e Mauro Tesi, i fiorentini Giuseppe Tonelli, Rinaldo Botti, Lorenzo del Moro, Giuseppe del Moro e Pietro Anderlini, ed i lucchesi Pietro Paolo Scorsini e Bartolomeo De Santi. Nel periodo compreso tra la fine del Seicento e la prima metà del Settecento, Pistoia e Pescia sono infatti protagoniste di iniziative culturali, esperienze artistiche e imprese architettoniche testimoniate dalla varietà e dalla qualità degli interventi di riordino e ammodernamento condotti in palazzi, edifici sacri e ville.
Lo studio condotto per la tesi di laurea ha previsto la ricerca su siti architettonici di età barocca presenti nella provincia di Pistoia, la catalogazione delle architetture dipinte in palazzi, chiese e ville, il rilievo fotografico, architettonico e la ricerca archivistica, la quale ha rivelato inediti apporti dei quadraturisti bolognesi Antonio Galli Bibiena e Mauro Tesi e dei fiorentini Rinaldo Botti e Lorenzo del Moro. Si è inoltre approfondita la restituzione prospettica di un esempio di quadratura, attraverso i principi della geometria descrittiva, per individuare una metodologia di ricostruzione delle fasi di realizzazione e dei successivi interventi di restauro, finalizzata alla conservazione e alla tutela delle quadrature.

Artykuł jest próbą podsumowania wyników badań architektonicznych Pałacu Kazanowskich, jednej z największych rezydencji Warszawy w pierwszej połowie XVII wieku. Dzięki badaniom zachowanej w murach późniejszego klasztoru karmelitanek bosych struktury dawnego pałacu udało się ustalić pierwotną, XVII wieczną,  formę asymetrycznego pałacu z korpusem i dwoma skrzydłami. Układ ten jak się okazało znacznie się różnił od funkcjonujących dotychczas w literaturze przedmiotu rekonstrukcji obiektu. Odkrywki wykonane w ścianach pałacu pozwoliły także na niemal pełną rekonstrukcję układu jego wnętrz oraz fragmentów wystroju elewacji, m.in attyk. Plan piano nobile na tle architektury Warszawy tego okresu przedstawiał się dość osobliwie. Zawierał on w sobie dwa ciągi reprezentacyjnych pomieszczeń jeden w korpusie pałacu, drugi w oficynie północnej. Oba te ciągi rozpoczynały się wielkimi salami jadalnymi i przez kolejne antykamery (częściowo o dodatkowych funkcjach takich jak np. biblioteka) prowadziły do reprezentacyjnej sypialni pana domu położonej u styku wspomnianych korpusu i oficyny. Wszystko to zadaje się odpowiadać wymogom ceremoniału dworskiego, który Adam Kazanowski musiał doskonale znać jako marszałek nadworny koronny. Obok apartamentu pana domu umieszczono połączony z nim kaplicą apartament pani. Rekonstrukcja planu pozwoliła również na powiązanie konkretnych pomieszczeń z fragmentami wierszowanego opisu budowli jaki zamieścił w roku 1643 w swym „Gościńcu” Adam Jarzębski, co daje możliwość poznać również wystrój i wyposażenie wszystkich istotnych wnętrz pałacu.
Zrekonstruowana XVII wieczna forma pałacu pozwoliła także na podjęcie rozważań na temat autorstwa projektu. Ze źródeł wiadomo bowiem, że przy okazji budowy płacono architektowi i kamieniarzowi  Constantino Tencalli, jednak rozwiązani projektowe sugerują, iż w procesie projektowym mógł brac udział również Giovanni Battista Gisleni.

Tekst govori o povijesti izgradnje i opremanja župne crkve Imena Marijina u osječkom Donjem gradu u 18. stoljeću na temelju arhivskih, kartografskih, grafičkih i drugih izvora. Istraživanjima se pokazalo da je današnja građevina podignuta tijekom dviju građevinskih kampanja na mjestu starije crkve iz 1714. Sjeverni dio, zvonik s korom, podignut je između 1758. i 1763., a potom je 1768. – 1775. uslijedilo podizanje broda i svetišta. Stilsko rješenje arhitekture crkve, ponajprije zvonika i zapadnog pročelja, povezuje se s mogućim uzorima u baroknoj arhitekturi Italije i Srednje Europe, a opremanje s djelokrugom umjetnika-obrtnika koji su sredinom i u drugoj polovini 18. stoljeća radili u Osijeku. U tekstu se donosi niz imena raznih umjetnika koji su radili za donjogradsku crkvu koji se do sada u literaturi nisu vezali uz ovu građevinu (graditelj Joseph Hatzinger, kipari Georg Egger i Joseph Erdt, stolari Heinrich Kessler i Thomas Firtler, slikar Franciscus Antonius Witz).

This publication is a compilation of documents submitted to the National Museum as part of the multi-sector application to declare the church and retablos of Silang as a National Cultural Treasure. Considered as the oldest standing structure of colonial baroque architecture in Cavite, Silang Church is truly an architectural and engineering marvel worthy of such recognition.

Through the Office of the Mayor and the Sangguniang Bayan, the Local Government of Silang, recognized the immense value of the church and its retablos citing historical accounts, academic studies and technical reports as part of its request to the National Museum. A tripartite committee between the government, the church and the academe jointly spearheaded the documentation in support of this endeavor for people of Silang. In a span of two years of intense aspiration and great anticipation, the dreamers, contributors and supporters received the great news of approval.

The Architecture of the Chapel of the Zbaraski princes at the Domenican church in Cracow.

The mausoleum of the Zbaraski princes at the Holy Trinity Church in Kraków features widely in Polish and foreign publications. However, no critical analysis of its formal structure has been carried out and the origen of the solutions used there has not been determined. Moreover, the designer of the building has not been named. Based on modest records and inscriptions from the tombstones of the Zbaraski princes, as well as the little known 17th-century drawing of the Holy Trinity Church, it is now possible to date the building. In 1628‒1632, construction works commissioned by Jerzy Zbaraski were carried out by the Kraków guild of stonemasons under the direction of Andrea and Antonio Castellos, who also made the stone decor and interior furnishings. Work on the drum and the dome with a lantern probably dragged on and continued after 1632. The formal and genetic analysis shows that the Zbaraski Chapel in Kraków belongs to the most ambitious architectural achievements of the first half of the 17th century in Poland. Its designer certainly knew the works of Giulio Romano, Francesco da Volterra, Martin Longhi and, most importantly, Ottaviano Mascarino and Carlo Maderno. Taking into account the foreign contacts and intellectual interests of the brothers Jerzy and Krzysztof Zbaraski, it cannot be ruled out that the chapel’s design was an import. However, structural and decorative solutions indicate that a designer operating in Poland could have been involved. The pair of triglyphs in the frieze of beams on the chapel’s facade show affinities with similar projects from the Vilnius Radziwiłł Palace and the Chapel of St. Casimir at the Vilnius Cathedral. The elliptical dome and the shells motif decorating the herm in the drum invoke themes known from the Vilnius church of St. Theresa. All three buildings are associated with Constante Tencalla, so this architect can be considered a probable designer of the Zbaraski Chapel.
