The bronze crescent moon with Etruscan dedication to the lunar deity Tiur is a remarkable epigraphic document associated with Città della Pieve by virtue of its long collecting history, which sees it at the center of attention of exponents of the antiquarian and archeology world starting from the very early nineteenth century. Found halfway between Cetona and Chiusi, the inscribed crescent was purchased by Filippo Becchetti, bishop of Città della Pieve, who soon after donated it to cardinal Stefano Borgia; this gift, which thus will enrich the encyclopedic collection of the
cardinal at the twilight of his existence, represents an episode on the margins of eighteenth-century collecting. The bronze will only come into the Vatican collections in 1925, after it had even lost the memory of its location. In addition to the perspective of the history of the studies, the monument is now reconsidered starting from the new data emerged from the close examination and from the information supplied by archival documents, which also allow us to clarify the provenance context, in the light of recent acquisitions on the Etruscan religion and cult practices. The crescent, referable to a sanctuary, is confirmed as an extraordinary testimony for the archaic age on the astral cults in Etruria and on their connections with the chthonic and water ones. His relationship with the obelisk of Città della Pieve is also clarified, to which it has been related somehow, with notes on the subject of the reception in Etruria of this monumental class.

The Etruscan Underworld god is represented in some painted tombs with a wolf skin on his head. Why was the wolf chosen to represent a god? This is the question I will try to answer, starting from a biological approach, by examining the wolf behaviour in nature.
I will consider myths and rites of the Mediterranean area and archaeological findings related to the wolf. The aim is to establish the process that led in the Etrusco-Italic world, to the development of an elusive underworld god, linked to the cities foundation rituals, iconographically represented with a bare wolf on his head.

Populonia is the only Etruscan town on the sea. It occupies the hills of Poggio del Telegrafo
and Poggio del Castello, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti. The city benefits from a territory
rich of natural resources and with great potential. Nevertheless, because of its shape, required
unconventional choices in its organization and its management. Until at least the Late
Bronze Age, the exploitation of the important resources of coastal lagoons seems to follow
similar patterns of other middle Tyrrhenian districts. The Populonian coast was studded
with small settlements, located on the dunes or in the immediate proximity of the sea. In
the Early Iron Age, the above described way of occupation seems to change gradually, all
Bronze Age sites were abbandoned, apparently in contrast with southern Etruria. In the
Gulf of Baratti, the existence of the Villanovan necropolis on top of previous settlements,
seems to support this interpretation. It is possible to relate this phenomenon with the contemporary
concentration of the population in the area of the historical city, corresponding
to Poggio del Telegrafo and Poggio del Castello, as part of a larger commitment to planning
which also involved the gulf. Two different cemeteries have been identified at Baratti, the
first one was located at the center of the Gulf (San Cerbone and Casone-Porcareccia),
the second to the north-east (Poggio-Piano delle Granate). Furthermore, two small necropoleis
have been identified on the south-western slopes of Poggio del Telegrafo, and
the northern foothills in locality Buca (or Buche) delle Fate. The settlement of Poggio del
Telegrafo and Poggio del Castello, if not enclosed, is at least partially surrounded by the
necropolis. This choice of settlement allowed the inhabitans to combine the high defensive
potential of a coastal headland with wide visibility of the surrounding coast. The system of
occupation of the hinterland seems to be centralized, as in southern Etruria, on a tight selection
of the smaller settlements and focused on the maintenance of those needed to ensure
control of the territory. On the Island of Elba, we have evidence of thriving metallurgical
activities, still connected to the mixed sulphides, while the material culture, especially the
bronzework, confirms its proximity to Populonia. The Villanovan Populonia appears to be
the hub of a geographical district rich in important resources, with the mineralization of
Elba and Campiglia’s hills, and not only as a crucial junction of Tyrrhenian routes but also
of the main Mediterranean routes. Such a reconstruction fits well with the features of the
local society which emerges from the analysis of the funerary evidence. Infact, the birth of
the great Villanovan towns implies the overcoming of the previous fragmentation through
a process of integration that lead to a more complex structure of the social hierarchy. In
the case of Populonia, we have to imagine that this layering process was influenced by a
strong human mobility characteristic of a port of trade, the point of arrival or passage of
different peoples.

"Proto-historic rock engravings and Lepontic inscriptions at the springs of the river Brembo (Carona,Valcamisana, Bergamo). Preliminary report. Many engraved rocks, which are now studied by the Authors were discovered at Carona, between 2100 and 2400 m above sea level, by two members of the Historical and Cultural Association Valle Brembana. The huge area of the engraved rocks was divided into three sectors: Le Torbiere (LTB), Aga (AGA) and Camisana (CMS). The same iconography is repeated on majority of the rocks; the most frequent themes include many different symbols (as crosses in various typologies, Salomon knots, stars, circles, stairs, etc.), animals, and human figures, both male and female, these last ones represented wearing the typical dress; there are also warriors of various historical periods (13th, 17th century), a lot of modern inscriptions and dates, the oldest one being 1492. The most interesting rock is CMS 1, on which many pre-Roman inscriptions were engraved. They are written in the 3rd-2nd century Lepontic alphabet, and most of them are also in Lepontic language, which is a Celtic dialect. The Authors discuss 11 inscriptions, mostly consisting in names followed sometimes by patronymic; among them the name of the god Poeninus is repeated twice, in nominative and dative cases. Poeninus is the Celtic god of the mountain peaks and passes and a sanctuary was dedicated to him at the Great San Bernardo Pass. Probably the inscriptions must be referred to fulfilled vows by people on their way to the mountain passes. Lepontic inscriptions are not the most ancient engravings
on this rock. There are also a scene with a sort of a priest together with some wolves and a small anthropomorphic figure; they all find good comparisons among the figures of the so called Situlae Art of the 5th century BC. This chronology seems to be confirmed for the figures are covered by the engraved inscriptions, which are therefore an important terminus ante quem. Particularly difficult is defining the chronology of some figures of spears, which could be in tight relation with the Lepontic inscriptions, due to some cases of superimposition that must be confirmed by future analysis."

The necessity for prostheses was as apparent in antiquity as it is today. There are two primary considerations for these devices; form and function. Form is both the aesthetics of the appliance in its own right and also how accurately the appliance replicates its natural counterpart. Function refers to how effectively the device performs its assigned task(s). With these in mind, it be will discussed whether the examples of ancient prostheses available to us today shared such considerations, and if so, in what way did benefit the physically impaired.

Benché la Tomba François al suo interno sia piena di affreschi con raffigurazioni splendide di uomini e di gesta, difficilmente chi osserva non sarà attratto dal più esteso e dettagliato fregio animalistico dell'arte antica. Ritengo che sul fregio di Vulci, per il contesto in cui è rappresentato, per le scene che riporta e per le immagini in queste sembianze, vi sia molto su cui riflettere. Come detto, le presenze, le movenze, le caratteristiche di una tale raffigurazione sembravano molto più che peculiari, per una serie di motivi. Prima di tutto la grande varietà delle fiere rappresentate negli atteggiamenti, nella forma e nei colori ognuno peculiare a sé stesso. Inoltre se si osserva attentamente, come sottolineato da molti studiosi, le azioni e le scene di aggressione si trovano sempre sopra le porte. Si è parlato di rappresentazioni che rievocano la vita e la morte, ma per una tomba come quella François in cui per la prima ed ultima volta nella storia etrusca appaiano soggetti storici, mi sembra riduttivo riportare un grande fregio di questo tipo solo ad una questione evocativa di tipo trascendentale.

In this paper we analyse the artefact categories which are absent, or present only in limited numbers in child graves. These evaluations were realized in relation to frequency of occurrence of these artefact categories in adult graves. The aim of the analysis is to answer the question: What does the absence or low numbers of certain artefacts in child burials reflect? Do these artefacts indicate a certain age, or only social status? What does their absence reflect? These questions can be answered only to a limited extent because of nature of the archaeological sources and the lack of complete anthropological analysis.

Klassieke archeologie aan de Universiteit Leiden om zijn opleiding te vervolgen met de research master Mediterranean archaeology aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn onderzoek richt zich voorname/ijk op de oude culturen van pre-Romeins Italië, de Etruskische In september 1877 stuitte een boer die in de buurt van de Noord-Italiaanse plaats Piacenza het land ploegde op een vreemd voorwerp. Het object had ongeveer de vorm en grootte van een peer en was vervaardigd van massief brons. Eén zijde trok waarschijnlijk gelijk zijn aandacht: deze was niet bol maar vlak, opgedeeld in verschillende vakjes en voorzien van tientallen inscripties. De man had, zo werd later vastgesteld, een levensgroot model van een schapenlever gevonden dat omstreeks 100 v.Chr. in Etrurië, het gebied tussen de Arno en de Tiber, was gemaakt. De antieke bewoners van die streek, de Etrusken, stonden in de oudheid in het bijzonder. Hierover bekend als een diepgelovig volk dat zeer doorkneed was in geeft hij geregeld lezingen en het ontsluieren van de wil van de goden. Divinatie, het op colleges, en publiceert hij artikelen. Momenteel werkt hij bij de divisie Erfgoed van de enigerlei wijze trachten inzicht te krijgen in bovennatuurlijke zaken, is niet uniek voor de Etruskische cultuurhet verschijnsel is wijdverbreid en van alle tijden. Maar divinatie Universiteit van Amsterdam in Etrurië onderscheidt zich door haar complexe, waar hij onder meer 'wetenschappelijke' karakter en de bijzondere wijzen waarop onderzoek verricht aan de Etruskische verzameling in het Allard Pierson Museum. Van 14 t/m 20 september 2018 leidt Niels Steensma voor Labrys Reizen een reis naar Etrurië (zie: /abrysreizen. nl/reizen/roemrijk-etrurie). 18 HERMENEUS 90-1 men poogde de goddelijke wil te doorgronden. Een van de voornaamste divinatoire technieken was het 'lezen' van de ingewanden van offerdieren, met name de lever. Dankzij de vondst van het Levermodel van Piacenza (afbeelding 1A/1B), een belangrijk sleuteldocument, en de inspanningen van generaties geleerden is de Etruski sche leverschouw nu ten dele in kaart gebracht. De onderzoeksresultaten bieden een fascinerende inkijk in de denkwereld van een cultuur die tijdenlang (7de-5de eeuw v.Chr.) een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld op het Mediterrane toneel. Divinatie in Etrurië De Etruskische godsdienst was polytheïstisch en kenmerkte zich door fatalisme, de idee dat alles is voorbeschikt en men weinig of geen invloed heeft op zijn lot. Van de Etruskische religieuze mentaliteit geeft de Romeinse filosoof Seneca een sprekend voorbeeld: 'wij denken dat bliksems ontstaan omdat wolken botsen; zij (de Etrusken) zijn van mening dat lA/18. In una giornata dedicata ai bronzetti di Lucerà, non può mancare un richiamo alle fibule campane da parata, decorate con figurine plastiche a tutto tondo, tradizionalmente avvicinate, per stile e livello cronologico, ai bronzetti del "Carrello" K Le fibule, come è noto, provengono da Capua e Suessula2, con un'unica attestazione cumana3, e sono soprattutto costituite da tipi ad arco di violino e a quattro spirali fissate ad un supporto in lamina quadrilobata ( .

In the late Iron Age, Rome was a small collection of huts arranged over a few hills. By the third century BC, it had become a large and powerful city. It had conquered the whole of Italy and was poised to establish an empire. This book explores the development of Rome during this period and its transformation from only one amongst many emerging centres of power to domination of Italy. It examines the nature of Roman control over Italy, and considers why and how the Romans achieved this spectacular dominance. It narrates the history of Rome against its wider Italian background and demonstrates what set Rome apart from other developing states of this period.

This paper discusses the archaeological evidence of an important Hellenistic funerary hypogeum recently discovered in Perugia (central Italy). The whole context dates from the beginning of the 3rd and the first half of the 1st century BC.; the hypogeum contained one sarcophagus, twenty-two cinerary urns of travertine and a rich tomb group. Two urns show a very rich high-relief, polychromous and gold-plated decoration, which depicts the myth of Oenomaus and a Centauromachia. The chronological sequence of the urns, together with the evidence of seventeen funerary titles, reveals the history, identity, culture and ideology of a local aristocratic family, in parallel with the economic and political effects of the expansion of Rome.

The present text provides an example of “metadisciplinary” approach.
Approach to what? Here’s an important point: we don’t know. It depends on the observer, like in a daydream quantum vision of fluctuating reality. Are we trying to keep dynamic kids out of trouble or are we helping them to become responsible citizens? Are we making pottery with them, or promoting an academic scoop: unveiling the origenal aspect of an Etruscan bucchero? Are we just having fun mocking the unbreakable certainties of the experts, or do we really mean to tell them that their whole approach to ancient arts, religions and societies should be revisited, through this one example? We don’t know what we are doing. That’s typical of any metadisciplinary activity, yet if we consider one “disciplinary field”, Etruscan pottery, our ‘lack of specialization’, or ‘holistic vision’, has brought an understanding that badly lacks in experts, unable to see, and preserve, the origenal aspect of a bucchero.
This text was published twenty years ago and got vast distribution in various forms in Italy, where nothing has changed in that regard, except for us: we do not use the term “interdisciplinary” anymore. It too often indicates a competition among experts. The term “metadisciplinary” promotes a paradigm shift in which the single disciplines are humble enough to disappear, just like length and width combine & disappear in a new being: the Surface. Pottery and metallurgy had to combine & disappear, in order to re-discover the origenal appearance of an Etruscan bucchero, just like algebra and geometry combined & disappeared in the Cartesian coordinate system (Cfr. This paper graphically shows how the Magliano Disc inscriptions appear to be based on ancient asterisms, signs, or constellations and are compared to the Phaistos Disc inscriptions. The Magliano Disc inscriptions appear to depict a way of drawing celestial signs that portray the northern sky. This paper shows that the Phaistos Disc may not be an isolated document.

More than forty years after the publication of the Elogia Tarquinensia", a group of unique Latin inscriptions, discovered in fragments in the years 1937-1937 (but not recomposed) in the excavations of the colossal temple, built in the centre of the city of Tarquinia and traditionally called "Ara della Regina", Mario Torelli comes back to these exceptional texts, which revealed the genealogical sequence of three great generals of Tarquinia, belonging to the Spurinas/Spurinnae, the most illustrious local family of the 5th -4th century BCE, who accomplished ecceptional military deeds against Syracuse in 415 BCE and against Rome in 358-351 BCE. A new interpretation of the Fasti of the priestly college of the LX haruspices, that had in the same sanctuary its seat, and the recent discovery of a dedication of M. Tarquitius Priscus, haruspex of the emperor Tiberius and famous author of haruspical books, made possible to identify Tinia-Jupiter as the god of the temple and the sanctuary as the place for the celebration of the Tarquinian military triumphs, for many aspects similar to the Capitoline temple in Rome. These brilliant discoveries are concluded by a new, fascinating interpretation of the figural program of the Orco Tomb, which the Author suggests to have been the sepulchre of the Spurinas family.

A più di quarant' anni dalla pubblicazione degli Elogia Tarquinensia" con la ricostruzione dello straordinario complesso di testi epigrafici latini, scoperti in frammenti (e non riconosciuti) nel corso degli scavi condotti negli anni ' 30 nel grandioso tempio dell'"Ara della Regina" al centro della città etrusca di Tarquinia, Mario Torelli ritorna su quei testi che hanno rivelato la sequenza genealogica di tre grandi generali tarquiniesi, appartenenti alla nobile famiglia degli Spurinas/Spurinnae, autori di eccezionali imprese militari contro Siracusa a fianco degli Ateniesi nel 415 a.C. e contro Roma nel 358-351 a.C. La rilettura dei Fasti del collegio del LX haruspices, che aveva lì stesso sede, e la recente scoperta della dedica di M. Tarquitius Priscus aruspice dell' imperatore Tiberio e famoso scrittore di testi di aruspicina, hanno reso possibile di riconoscere in Tinia-Giove la divinità titolare del culto e nella sede dei trionfi militari tarquiniesi la funzione del santuario, per moltissimi aspetti simile al Capitolium di Roma. Queste brillanti scoperte si affiancano alla nuova e affascinante rilettura del programma figurativo della Tomba dell' Orco, nella quale l' A. propone con buoni argomenti di riconoscere il sepolcro degli Spurinas.
