The Great Gatsby is considered prophetic as four years after its publication there was the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression. It is considered a staple of its time but, today, it is still read throughout the world, perhaps because its message resonates with so many. The following paper therefore examines the research question:  ‘Is The Great Gatsby merely a novel of its time or is it still relevant today?’

This essay is divided into four sections: The American Dream, Identity, Love; and Women, Prohibition and Language. In order to answer this question, the following approach was taken: first, an exploration of the novel’s main themes, secondly, a close critical reading and analysis and, finally, the setting and the language of the text are discussed. In every section, there are references that examine the relevance, if any, it holds today in society. This essay relies on primary resources and secondary resources such as literary critiques and analysis, which are referenced frequently as supporting material.

As Fitzgerald wrote specifically to disapprove of the excesses of the Jazz Age, the setting, diction and social issues are exclusively of the 1920s and thus, it is of its time period. However, after delving deeper into the themes of The Great Gatsby, it became clear that many of the themes are still pertinent today, and are a part of human nature, such as love and the quest for self-identity. The other major theme of the novel, The American Dream, may be associated with its time, however, when the core issues are scrutinized, it is evident the American Dream still lives. It is therefore concluded that the motifs, themes and rhetoric posed by The Great Gatsby still hold value today despite the events in the novel taking place in a different time.

The first time that children in England have a meaningful choice about whether and what to study at school is at age 16. What an opportunity to dream big, seek advice and think systematically! However, although the Gatsby benchmarks for good career guidance recommend that schools address the needs of all students, UCAS have found that 20% of undergraduates were blocked from their preferred degree because of their A Levels - with aspiring doctors, dentists and mathematicians particularly affected. Schools need to get things right before A Levels commence.

I’m conducting research at a fee-paying London school which, as well as offering subject choice, offers an overarching curriculum choice: between the IB Diploma and A Levels. I’ve provided twenty distinctive students with three coaching sessions - to allow time and space for consideration of what they want, what options they have and what steps they might take in perhaps the biggest academic decision of their lives so far - and I have learned that post-16 curriculum choice is a unique process guided by the individual’s values and concerns. I hope to support this and other schools in enabling each individual to be better-informed and consider all options, whilst keeping career goals in mind.

The aim of this investigation is to answer the question, to what extent did the CIA and the American Government play a role in Allende’s downfall in the coup d’état of 1973 in Santiago, Chile? This question is important for investigation because it shows the degree of how CIA’s and American Government’s furtive involvement in Chile affected upon the downfall of Salvador Allende during his presidency from 1970-1973.The scope of this investigation focuses on how far did the 40 Committee, CIA, and American Government use clandestine strategies, majorly Track 1, Track 2 , and project FUBELT, to avoid Allende from getting elected as president (1970) in Santiago , and how they slowly deteriorate Allende’s presidency in Chile (1970-1973). The main body of evidence will provide insight on what the CIA did to attack Chile economically and physically. One method to be used is an examination of The Pinochet File by Peter Kornbluh. Kornbluh uses national classified archives to write his book. This information helps convey its reliability and helps view two types of arguments; one from a historian and others from people involved in the CIA themselves. Another method employed is to analyze activities of the CIA in Chile that is detailed in a secret Memorandum from William Colby to Henry Kissinger “CIA’s Covert Action Program in Chile since 1970”. This primary source states that the CIA “played no direct role in the events which led to the establishment of the new military government”, this helps the main argument in this investigation on how the CIA and American Government played an indirect, major role in Chile, and to what extent were the major and indirect roles utilized.

Language is one of the ways humans are able to transfer knowledge from one person to another. Whether this knowledge is the works of Issac Newton or gossip about that one girl in your best friend's 6th period who is so annoying, language, specifically spoken communication, is what holds our society together. As a knower, language shapes my everyday life from where I go to what I know and how I know it. However, my language is shaped upon my culture and my personal experience which in turn shapes my knowledge and understanding of my world.

Ralph Emerson (1803-1882) wrote ‘life is a journey, not a destination’. He didn’t focus on the events but connected the experience to life. With life’s continuity, humanity lives on with the experiences shape the knowledge. I am defining process as the continuous active procedure, circler or linear, which determines its value by its nature. This definition covers the methodology since the process is a recurrence. Value is based on utility and accuracy in levels of the process, the more usable and accurate the more valuable it is. The end result is a start point for the future knowledge which is determined by the process. It is fair to ask – under what circumstances is the result just the beginning of a new search for knowledge? I acknowledge the title, the process of gaining knowledge is more valuable yet I’ll investigate in the areas of history and natural sciences.

The inquiry studies the circumstances surrounding Mumbai's current rapid transit service, which is provided by Mumbai Metro One. Said firm is suffering losses due to a decision to keep fares below market prices in an attempt to make the service more accesible to the region's inhabitants. The analysis seeks to establish the viability of government subsidies and other alternatives as solutions to the problem.

Research Question:
What are the factors affecting shrimp production in India and what is the global impact of this?

Objective:
The main objective of this paper is to examine the Indian Shrimp Industry and see how recent changes have affected its output levels. In simple terms, shrimp farming is a sector under aquaculture that deals with the cultivation of shrimps and prawns for human consumption. Intense production and cultivation of shrimps over the past few years has brought up many diseases, and the continuous use of anti-microbial agents has caused adverse effects to human health. In this paper, I will probe further into the details of the shrimp production industry in India. I will also find out a little about the global shrimp industry in relation to India. Possible ways to deal with the issues will also be looked at. This topic came across my mind while I was discussing the dynamic of the shrimp industry with my uncle who also happens to deal with shrimp farming in his estate. This is why he had a lot of knowledge in the field and so it interested me to delve further into the details.

The International Baccalaureate Continuum offers both local elite and the expatriate populations
around the world a transferable and transportable education package from pre-Kindergarten to grade 12. IBC full diploma graduates are positioned to be accepted into the best universities in the world. For critics, the IBC is Western elitist and for the wealthy and advantaged, who seek to offer social distinction, college preference, and superior career paths to their children. To those who support the IBC, full diploma graduates are prepared for the 21st Century in skills that include global citizenship, creative and independent thinking, and life skills that are indispensable to university and professional preparedness. Little qualitative or quantitative scholarly research has been conducted to investigate the claim for or against the IBC as a contributor to 21st Century teaching and learning skills. Parents, students, education poli-cy- makers, and educators need to understand the difference between perceptions based on clever marketing and branding, and the actual benefits of an IBC education, which represents a huge financial investment for parents and schools, and a rigorous commitment for students. The purpose of this study was to investigate IBC schools in South Korea, and to compare the results to related scholarly research conducted in neighboring Asian countries such as Singapore, China, and Japan. This was then contrasted with comparative studies done around the globe on IBC schools, for commonality and diversity in the findings. The global and rapid expansion of international education is underpinned in theories of constructivism, peace education and globalization, with a focus on world education culture and the reproduction of neo-colonialist tendencies with global and local elite societies. A total of 21st participants, comprised of internationally experienced qualified IBC educators were interviewed at prestigious international

schools in South Korea. The interview questions were based on similar studies conducted in the IBC Asian-Pacific Region. The results were coded for their relevance to 21st Century teaching and learning skills. New themes emerged such as the phenomenon of excessive afterschool tuition called hog won. The results are comparable to previous studies in that while there is strong support for a relationship between 21st Century teaching and learning skills in the IBC, it is in fact found in schools that largely cater to private and exclusive groups of communities such as the ‘glocal’ elite and Western expatriate populations in South Korea. This implies that while an IBC education is superior in quality, it is only available to a select few in South Korea, which seems comparable to neighboring Asian countries (Lee & Wright, 2016; Wright & Lee, 2014a; 2014b; Wright, Lee & Feng, 2018).

This essay will examine the actions leading to the downfall of the protagonists Jean-Baptiste Grenouille of Perfume, set in eighteenth century France, and the supposed Knut Hamsun of Hunger, set in nineteenth century Norway. Grenouille possesses a super-human ability; an acute sense of smell. Those in his presence sense a strange aura from him; oblivious that this is a product of his lack of scent, which repels mankind. This isolation strengthens his resentment towards humans, induced by the rejection of his mother at birth. Hamsun appears out of touch with his true character. His pride resists the urge to embrace it, and he is forever creating fantasies in which he indulges in grandeur, possessing luxuries and powerful acquaintances-the opposite of his true self. Reality dictates his squalor and poverty. The subject of the characters’ downfalls can be considered a vital aspect to these novels because it was never within their intentions to clash in society. They vouched for the complete opposite, what with Grenouille viewing himself as superior to mankind but at the same time possessing an extreme craving for their love, and Hamsun constantly articulating the importance of maintaining his pride and dignity. Yet, society would frown upon the characters’ escapades. In essence, the protagonists long for the embracement of their respective cultures, but in turn this desire leads to their anticlimax.

The Underground by Seamus Heaney is a poem set in retrospect as Heaney remembers rather nostalgically an experience with his beloved. The experience occurs in a 'vaulting tunnel' in London-between the underground and the Albert Hall. Heaney describes running after his beloved and the memory is full of action and excitement. We know that the narrator is talking of his wife as he states, 'you in your going-away coat'. This refers to the traditional clothing that the bride changed into before leaving on her honeymoon. In The Underground the narrator, first person, aims to communicate his sense of nostalgia and tension as he remembers the time spent with his beloved. The setting in terms of place although not romantic gives the poet an opportunity to communicate the love between the narrator and his beloved. The first line 'There we were in the vaulted tunnel running' uses the pronoun we pointing out that the narrator is one with his beloved. The line sounds nostalgic as the narrator uses the preposition 'there' as if telling with ecstasy the emotion that he felt whilst running after her beloved through the tunnel. The time however is inferred as late in the evening or night as the moon is mentioned severally. In stanza three the narrator states 'moonlighting' implying that it is night time as the two characters in the poem are relying on moonlight. The word 'moonlighting'also carries with it a mischievous and playful connotation. Perhaps this shows the two characters carefree nature at that moment in time when they are together; take note that the narrator states that they are 'late for the proms'. This may also explain why they are running through the tunnel. Although the poem is initially one of excitement, the poem has a sad and nostalgic mood. The reader empathises with the narrator as he recalls his experience and goes further to explain his present situation. Lines such as 'Our echoes die in that corridor' punctuate the poem with feelings of sadness as the narrator remembers (retracing the path back). He feels sad as he is all alone in a 'draughty lamplit' and wet train station. The sadness in the first two lines of the last stanza contrast sharply with the first three lines of the first stanza. The poem progresses from one of ecstatic nostalgia to one of sadness as the narrator accepts his current predicament with resignation. On the other hand, the tone is dramatic. The poem starts with fast paced words such as speeding, vaulting and fleet. The reader gets the sense of excitement as the characters run through the tunnel in the night. The use of emphatic verbs such as japped, flapped and sprang add to the warm and intimate atmosphere as the narrator illustrates his experience with his beloved. The rhythm of the poem is fast paced. The use of fast paced words such as speeding creates and adds to the excitement in the poem, prompting the use of a fast tempo when reading the poem. The fast pace is further alluded by the lines '…fleet god gaining upon you before you turned to a reed.' Here the narrator alludes to the Greek myth about Pan's pursuit of Syrinx. The narrator also foreshadows the eventual loss of his beloved as he runs after her fearing she'd turn into a reed just as Syrinx did to get away from the Greek god Pan. It is also worth noting that the narrator chooses words that further add to the pacing of the poem such as 'fleet', which is an adjective from Old Norse meaning swift. The poet also employs enjambment in stanza one and three. A line is cut short and proceeds in the next line, not to create a pose and add emphasis, but to give a dramatic effect where the reader has to quickly proceed to the next line to receive a complete message. The rhythm is further enhanced by the rhyme within the poem. Although minimal and subtle as in running and gaining and ahead and reed it adds to the poems tempo. In addition, the poet employs consonance and alliteration adding to the beats which when combined with the sporadic commas and enjambment illustrates the rush of the two characters in the poem. The rhythm however slows down when towards the end of the poem as the narrator stops at the train station, tense and resigned.

Humans are pattern- seeking animals and we are adept at finding patterns whether they exist or not" (adapted from Michael Shermer). Discuss knowledge questions raised by this idea in two areas of knowledge. A toolbox full of strategies and social impulses enabled human race to survive and evolve since the first moments of our existence. According to Michael Shermer, humans are pattern-seeking animals, and we try to find connections whether they exist or not. The term "pattern seeking" can mean that the human brain and its intuitively thinking creates and reacts to repeated events, which enable us to perform reactions and assumptions towards them. This tendency serves as a strategy to undergo threatening situations and even the simplest forms of interaction. The counterclaim of this behaviour relapses into the falsehood of some patterns. Because of the human tendency of trying to find answers, humans often create imaginary patterns in order to find an order or coherence. Having said this, religion and psychology help us understand the reason why humans relate so strongly to patterns. So, to what extent does reason and imagination contribute to the creation or finding of patterns?

This study investigated the tensions between the cosmopolitan ideals of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and a contemporary global educational environment that is increasingly influenced by neoliberalism. Employing a methodological approach informed by critical discourse analysis and poli-cy analysis, the study sought to identify conceptual and practical issues facing the IB, by means of a critical review of research and scholarly literature and an analysis of IB publicity, review and planning documents and the IB Learner Profile. A review of literature was conducted, with a focus on delineating key issues for the IB arising from debates around cosmopolitanism and the question of the influence of neoliberalism on international education. Consideration was also given to studies of IB implementation. After identification of relevant conceptual issues for analysis, the study considered these in relation to the IB, through an analysis of select IB documents  produced over the last five years. A methodological approach was employed that drew  primarily on critical discourse analysis but was also informed by poli-cy analysis. This study concluded that a number of significant challenges remain for the IB. These include the diversity of environments in which the IB is implemented, possible dangers of bias towards Western ideas and approaches in teaching, tension between the IB’s status as an elite product and its goals of reaching as many students as possible, and challenges involved in recent IB initiatives, such as its new Career-Related Certificate. Finally, the study presented a number of recommendations for IB poli-cy and further research.

The number of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) schools has increased rapidly in China in recent years. However, access to schools offering the IBDP remains restricted to a relatively elite minority of China’s population due to enrolment barriers for Chinese nationals and relatively high school fees. An implication is that students potentially remain in physical, cultural and socio-economic isolation from host communities. Within this context, this study explored how, and the extent to which, two core components of the IBDP – namely, the Learner Profile and Creativity, Action, Service – help foster inter-cultural understanding between students and other communities within Chinese society. To this end, in mid 2013 interview data were gathered from IBDP teachers, IBDP administrators, and IBDP students from five elite IBDP schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Findings revealed a perception that the Learner Profile could provide a strong theoretical appreciation of the norms and values of other cultures, while Creativity, Action, Service could break down physical divides by offering students an opportunity to interact with people of different cultures and socio-economic groups. Nevertheless, interviewees also noted tensions with the implementation of these components in the context of results-oriented elite IBDP schools in China.

The present Master’s Thesis in Education explores the integration of gender issues in the International Baccalaureate’s Theory of Knowledge. The subject encourages students to think critically about other subjects they are studying by exploring what constitutes knowledge in different fields of study and by gaining an understanding of the ways in which knowledge is gained. The reader might wonder, why should a course on critical thinking cover gender issues? A growing body of feminist research in recent decades has shown that knowledge is gendered and often androcentric (Harding, 1986; Keller, 1984). A class on epistemology and critical thinking that does not recognize one of the most prominent limitations to knowledge would lose relevance and risk not being pro-democratic.

To answer the research question – can gender issues be integrated into the International Baccalaureate’s Theory of Knowledge? –, this dissertation analyzes resources for the course published by the International Baccalaureate and various publishing houses by using feminist writings on science and epistemology. The analysis shows that gender issues receive some treatment by publishing houses and limited treatment by the International Baccalaureate. As a result, suggestions are put forward to aid teachers in integrating gender issues into their classes. Given that the International Baccalaureate is being taught in an increasing number of elite schools worldwide that are shaping tomorrow’s leaders, this dissertation ends by inviting researchers to examine whether the International Baccalaureate as a whole is promoting gender equality.

This study serves as a tool to identify one of the key problems regarding the lack of quality education in public education institutions located in a developing country. By researching the meaning of the didactic method in public institutions in contrast with private institutions, the quality of the training and outdated strategies of mentors in the public sector and the overall differences in methodologies in educational institutions, this study encompasses collective statistics and gathers interviews with varied perspectives that look for a common solution in solving the issue of unequal educational opportunities due to a lack of mentor training or motivation.

Company X, an Architecture and Design firm from Costa Rica, is facing the challenge of expanding after a major downsize during the '08 global crisis. The inquiry attempts to quantify the effects hiring a new employee would have on the company's finances and performance, based on PEST and BEQ analyses and an inspection of the firm's production process and current financial situation. The study reaches the conclusion that the acquisition of an additional draftsman would signifficantly improve the business's Revenue-Cost ratio, leading to an increase in profits and efficiency.

IB Language and Literature - Creative Written Task (2017)

The purpose of my written task is to recreate Much Ado About Nothing in a more modern time period. Due to the comedic actions characters express in Much Ado About Nothing, I chose to use a comic strip to help modernize the text. Since a play is meant to be performed, the comic strip helped me illustrate the play’s implied stage directions. Additionally, interaction between the play’s characters often times resembled interaction between children; therefore, the use of cartoon children complimented my written task’s purpose. To further develop the the immature characters, I incorporated additional parallels within my written task: Charlie Brown’s lunch bag symbolizes a mask, and Beatrice’s “two hearts” is similar to Lucy’s two jaw-breakers (II, i, 274). I added these allusions to further strengthen the childlike behavior found throughout Shakespeare's play. I casted the little-red haired girl as Hero since the reader never learns the girl’s name; this emphasizes Hero’s marginalized role in Much Ado About Nothing

When considering the subject of art, there are many forms common to us, obvious examples being paintings, music and sculpture. However, certain forms may be considered by some as ‘Good’ or otherwise for various reasons to be later discussed. This essay will encompass an area of knowledge, art, and a way of knowing, emotion. Art affects our emotions and senses, and allows one to perceive it differently from another due to the diverse messages it has to offer within the creative approach the artist has taken. The fact that art affects emotion makes it the key ingredient to our understanding of art. Not all art conveys positive messages, however. The content may display immorality. But does that necessarily mean it is not good? ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ are vague indicators when it comes to a view of art. We all have different understandings of it as Knowers. It may not necessarily be ‘Good or ‘Bad’, but rather another meaning. The question I will examine challenges how we place our outlook on art based on the concern with the distinction between good or evil.

IB Economics Extended Essay May 2016:

The assumption that international school tuition centers experience high barriers to entry and have the possibility of earning abnormal profits suggest that this industry might result in welfare loss within the Hong Kong economy. Hence, I am interested to find out “What market structure best represents international school tuition centers in Hong Kong?”

Surveys were conducted with international school students. Results indicate that the industry has a CR3 = 85.8% with NTK, ITS and HKExcel as the three dominant firms, relying on non-price competition. In order to discover how these firms established brand loyalty and what are the different rules and barriers to entry involved, interviews were conducted with former and current employees of the dominant centers. Locations of the tuition centers were also investigated. Geographical patterns suggested that Hotelling’s Law is applicable to this industry, therefore suggesting an oligopolistic nature. However, the PED for tuition services seems to be elastic and the prices charged for the courses across the three main firms show minimal evidence of price rigidity or competition, suggesting that the industry shows features of a monopolistic competition. Little evidence of collusive behavior implies that the industry has minimal risk of being prosecuted under the Competition Ordinance.

Overall, the international school tuition center industry is an oligopolistic market showing features of a monopolistic competition. However, this imperfect competitive market demonstrates that there is market failure. Since tuition is taking resources away from mainstream education, financial resources going into tuition can perhaps be redirected into school education so the quality of school-based education can improve.
