George Smith co-anchors Fox 32’s Good Day Chicago. He joined the WFLD team in October 2015.

He has been a TV anchor and reporter for more than two decades. Before coming to Chicago, George anchored the 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. news at WOIO-TV in Cleveland. He spent 10 years as a correspondent for ESPN appearing on SportsCenter and Outside the Lines.
 
Beginning in 2003, he was based in Chicago for ESPN and covered Sammy Sosa’s corked bat incident, the White Sox World Series run in 2005 and the Bears Super Bowl run at the end of the 2006 season. George covered four Olympic Games (Athens, Beijing, Vancouver and London) and worked on major national stories such as Kobe Bryant’s rape case, the Duke Lacrosse scandal and Michael Vick’s dogfighting saga. Another memorable assignment came in 2011. He accompanied the 1985 Chicago Bears to the White House to meet President Obama 25 years after the team’s Super Bowl victory.

George went to Phillips Academy Andover, Oberlin College and earned his master’s degree at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. A former alumni trustee at Andover, he’s currently a member of the Oberlin College Heisman Club, which supports the college’s athletic department. Smith is also a member of the Oberlin College President’s Advisory Council and is part of the college’s mentoring program.

His father, George Bundy Smith, was a judge on New York state’s Court of Appeals. His mother, Alene, was a professor at Hunter College.

A sports fanatic, George still enjoys playing basketball as well as watching college and pro sports. He’s travelled to 49 states and hopes to get to Alaska soon to reach 50.
