Morehead, Ky.-- A red-hot second half by UT Martin and a tenacious Skyhawk defense sank the Morehead State women's basketball team 102-63 Thursday night in Johnson Arena.
Morehead State (5-6) was led in scoring by
Chrishawn Coleman with 12 points and
Harley Paynter with 10.
The first quarter was a back-and forth affair and the Skyhawks took a 25-21 lead in the quarter break. UT Martin (3-8) turned up the defensive effort in the quarter and forced 14 first half MSU turnovers leading to 16 UTM points. The Skyhawks used a 7-0 run to end the second quarter to take the lead 42-29 at the intermission.
After the break, the Skyhawks got off to a fast start hitting 5-10 from the floor to race out to a 55-35 lead at the 4:54 mark. The teams traded baskets the rest of the period and UTM took a 66-45 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter was all UT Martin; the Skyhawks scorched the nets in the final frame hitting 13-16 (81%) from the floor, including 3-5 from three-point range.
UT Martin was led by Kenley McCarn with 24 points and Daejah Richmond with 19. Kayana Armbrister finished with 13, while Anaya Brown and Shae Littleford added 11 apiece.
Morehead State returns to action Saturday when they host Tennessee State in Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00.
