MOREHEAD, Ky. – On a muggy Wednesday night, the Morehead State soccer team opened exhibition play with a 3-0 victory over Pikeville at the MSU Soccer Field. It was the ninth straight game the squad has either won or tied at home.
The game was divided into three periods of 30 minutes each.
After Pikeville kept the Eagles off the board in the opening period, freshman forward
BB Bonzheim broke the drought with a goal at 33:39. Graduate student defender
Maddie Feldhaus set up the play with a cross from the right side to the middle of the field that Bonzheim tapped over the line.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the contest when MSU added two goals in the final 20 minutes. Junior midfielder
Kennedy Baquero set up both scores, the first off a corner kick that graduate student defender
Anna Lohrer kicked inside the left post from six yards out, and the second after breaking free down the middle of the field where she passed the ball inside the box to sophomore forward
Hedda Ornberg on her right, who took two dribbles and kicked it low toward the left post past a diving Millie Conod. The first score came at 71:40, with the second at 78:05.
Three Eagle keepers shared the shutout. Freshman
Claire Cress got the start and yielded to classmate
Lilly Bailey and eventually graduate student
Reegan Garrity. Each played one quarter, and none were forced to make any saves.
MSU took 24 shots to Pikeville's one. Sophomore midfielder
Mary Trudeau led the way with four; followed by freshman forward
Ava Peck, Baquero and Ornberg with three apiece. Bonzheim, redshirt sophomore forward
Jade Perrin and freshman defender
Ella Fuller each had two.
Sara Ritter got off the lone shot for Pikeville in the 43rd minute.
In addition to shots, the Eagles held advantages in corner kicks (12-0) and fouls (7-8). MSU was flagged for being offside five times to just once for the Bears.
Conod surrendered all three goals but also made eight saves in 75 minutes in the Pikeville net. Kayley Smith played 15 minutes and made two saves.
One yellow card was issued to Pikeville's Julia Pinson with 5:05 left to play.
Listen to MSU
coach Paul Cox and
junior midfielder Kennedy Baquero discuss the victory.
Morehead State hosts Cincinnati on Saturday at 1 p.m. in its final exhibition contest, before opening the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Marshall.
