Powered Industrial Trucks

Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT), commonly known as forklifts, pallet trucks or lift trucks used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack or tier materials. During this movement of materials, numerous opportunities exist for injuries and property damage.

The PIT Program has been developed to minimize the risk of injury to employees or bystanders and to avoid damage to university property.

This program establishes minimum requirements to:

  • Ensure the safe operation of PITs.

  • Assign responsibilities to personnel for successful implementation of the program.

  • Ensure that employees understand and comply with safety standards related to powered industrial trucks, including:

•  use
•  maintenance
•  employee training
•  equipment inspections
•  incident reporting
