1. Explain what African coil pots are and why they are used. Show the students different
pictures of different types of coil pots.
2. Students will build a form using coil techniques. And students will pinch, pull, and roll
material.
3. Tell the students that when they get the magic model clay they will first need to pinch
some off and roll it as evenly as possible and form it into a pattern with a base that is a
circular coil. Let them decide for themselves the way they want the pattern to be on it.
4. Show students what the magic model clay will look like after they get done. Show
students how to roll it up to where there are not many bumps in it.
5. Make sure students know the reasoning for African coil pots, and ask to see if they
have any questions about the way to make it.
6. Now demonstrate how you get the pieces to stick together with out using much force
or the clay will form differently than what they want it to. Make sure everyone is one the
same page about how they can not be bumpy.
7. Walk around the classroom while students are working on their pots. Tell them how
good of a job they are doing.
8. Have students walk around viewing their classmates works of art. And make sure
they know the importance of African Art.
