PRINCIPAL MEDIA SPECIALIST RACHEL THOMPSON MEDIA CENTER EVALUATION APRIL 11, 2013

Mrs. Herring and I completed the media program evaluation today, April 11, 2013. We used the Georgia DOE 2012 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric. The media center scored Exemplary in nine areas, Proficient in six areas, and Basic in four areas. Exemplary Categories: Your media center program and specialist both do an excellent job with providing services to students with various learning needs. The media specialist also actively plans with other teachers in the building in order to enrich and remediate instruction. The media center exceeds the minimum square footage requirements and technologies are used and integrated on a regular basis. Print and non-print resources are available throughout the school and off campus due to Internet access. The OPAC is also available online throughout the school. The media specialist communicates regularly with other media specialists in the district and takes on a leadership role alongside the district administrators. Finally, your media specialist provides numerous opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance their professional and technology skills. Proficient Categories: Your media center program and specialist integrate literacy skills into the curriculum based on the Common Core GPS and Georgia Performance Standards. The media center serves mainly as an extension of the classroom. Flexible scheduling and staff are available throughout the day to assist teachers or students. Professional development and instruction are given over GALILEO, both to students and teachers. While there is a library media advisory committee, they do not meet on a regular, scheduled basis. Finally, a library media center policy is in place and is consistently used, per the school district. Basic Categories: Your media center program and specialist displays encouraging bulletin boards that support reading. The media specialist is not in charge of assessing the students in any way. Due to budget cuts, the media

specialist is required to perform other duties on a daily basis. Finally, also due to budget cuts, the media program receives the minimum allocation for expenditures each year.

Action Plans: Some situations, such as funding, are impossible to change. However, there are a few things that can be done to push the media center program to the next level. In order to move from proficient to exemplary, your media specialist has pledged to integrate the information literacy standards into every day instruction. Instead of focusing mainly on Common Core GPS or Georgia Performance Standards, the AASL Standards will also be implemented consistently. She will also provide information to teachers and staff on how to effectively integrate the new Common Core GPS along with the AASL Standards. Also, in order to move from basic to proficient, your media specialist has also made the commitment to encourage and support reading, viewing, and listening. Book clubs for students will be created/offered, implementation of miscellaneous reading programs will take place, and incentives for reading will be available.
