Part One: World Literature: 3 texts in translation (WL)

Assessment: One (SL) or Two (HL) World Literature Papers of 1200-1500 words. This is
externally assessed. WL 1 is a Comparative Study of 2 of the works and will be completed in
Year One/ WL2 is a comparative, creative or detailed study of an extract and will be completed
in the fall of Year Two.

Part Two: Detailed Study: Intensive Critical Study of 4 texts from 4 different genres
2 (SL) or 4 (HL)

William Shakespeare, Othello, Britain, 16th c. (Drama)


Sylvia Plath, Britain, 20th c. (Poetry)
Michael Ondaatje, Running in the Family, Canada, 20th c. (Non-Fiction) (HL ONLY)
Toni Morrison, Jazz, USA, 20th c. (Fiction) (HL ONLY)

Assessment: Formal 15 minute IOC – Individual Oral Commentary on an excerpt from one of
the studied texts. Internally assessed/externally moderated.

Part Three: Groups of Works: Study of a Literary Genre 3 works (SL) and 4 works (HL)
Taught Semester Two, Year Two

Ibsen, Hedda Gabler, Norway, 19th c. (WL)


Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire, USA, 20th c.
Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest, Ireland, 19th c.
Bennett, The History Boys, England, 20th c. (HL only)

Assessment: Part Three is preparation for the Final Exam, May 2010. Paper One: 1.5 hrs (SL)
2 hrs (HL) is an unseen commentary on a poetry or prose selection provided and Paper Two:
1.5 hrs. (SL) 2 hrs. (HL) of the final exam is a comparative essay on 2-3 of Part Three texts

Assessment: An oral presentation of 12-15 minutes on a chosen aspect of a text from Part
Four: Internally Assessed.
The WL component may be used for WL Paper Two.
