In an effort to find new sources
of revenue for the township, Medford officials are working on a
project Deputy Mayor Jeff Beenstock says no municipality in
New Jersey has done before.
Beenstock confirmed at last
weeks Medford Township Council meeting the township is in negotiations to purchase the Park
View Cemetery at Kirbys Mill
from the Medford Cemetery Association.
Council has scheduled special
meetings on Tuesday, March 24 at
7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 28
at 10 a.m. At those meetings, complete details about the proposal
and the transactions will be released.

Town, association still negotiating

the township and Medford Cemetery Association are still negotiating the deal.
We do not have a written
agreement, Beenstock said. We
are continuing to negotiate.
Beenstock described the project as purely an investment op-

portunity. The township is looking to bring in extra revenue from

sources other than taxes.
Every year, the township has
to raise from other sources
money to fund its budget, Beenstock said. When we ran into financial trouble a few years ago, it
was because we werent able to
close that gap substantially.
If the township purchases the
cemetery, profits from the site
would go into the townships general fund. Beenstock said the
amount of revenue coming into
the township could be substantial, potentially up to $1 million
on an annual basis.
The Medford Cemetery Association is a non-profit organization
formed in 2008 to manage the old
OddFellows Cemetery in Medford
Village. The organization opened
the Park View Cemetery at
Kirbys Mill in 2013.
Beenstock said the organization approached the township
about purchasing the cemetery
more than a year ago. The township decided to take a closer look
at the groups proposal last year.

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival

cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunged us. Winter started off
just fine, but it put a damper on everything, and everyone, in February and
so far this month. Just last week, snow
was dumped across the state.
Winter has not just affected all of

Snow and biting cold have kept people in the mindset of no end in sight,
and have prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful goodweather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Medford Police respond

to head-on collision with injuries
The following information was
provided by the Medford Township Police Department.
Medford Township Police responded to a head-on collision on
Taunton Boulevard near the intersection of Park Drive. A 29year-old woman from
Moorestown was operating a 2011 Nissan
Rouge
south
on
Taunton
Boulevard
and failed to properly
negotiate the curve.
She crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a Lexus driven by a
48-year-old woman from Maple
Shade. The Moorestown woman
was not wearing a seatbelt and
subsequently sustained a head injury when her head struck the
windshield of her vehicle. She
and a 54-year-old man from Medford, who was a passenger, both
sustained injuries as a result of
the crash. The cause of the crash

is still under investigation.

On Feb. 26 at 1:11 p.m., Medford
police conducted a motor vehicle
stop in the area of Fairview Road
and Cove Lane of a 2009 white
GMC pickup for a non-working
brake light. While police were
speaking with the
driver, an odor of raw
marijuana was detected emanating from
the interior of the vehicle. Medford Police
K-9 "Porter" alerted to
the presence of narcotics inside
the vehicle. Police obtained a
search warrant and found several
plastic containers of raw marijuana. The driver, a 22-year-old
man from Medford, was arrested
and charged with possession of
marijuana over 50 grams and
drug paraphernalia. He was also
charged with two motor vehicle
summonses for maintenance of
lamps and possession of a con-

Club wants to install butterfly

garden at Cranberry Park

The Monarch Butterfly has become an increasingly rare sight
across New Jersey in recent
years. The plight of the butterfly
has been a focus of many garden
clubs in the state, including the
Pinelands Garden Club of Medford.
Butterflies have been around
for 40 million to 50 million years,
said Janet Carlson Giardina, a
member of the Pinelands Garden
Club. Every year, the number of
butterflies is being reduced.
To combat this issue, the garden club has come up with a possible solution to allow butterflies
to flourish in Medford.
The garden club has proposed
installing a butterfly garden in
the township. The garden would
be located at Cranberry Park, on
Filbert Street between Church
and Mulberry streets near Medford Village.
It would be available to all
members of the community for
the purposes of education,
preservation and enjoyment, Giardina said.
The garden club presented a
concept design to township council during its Feb. 17 meeting. The
purpose of the project is to help
provide a place for the endangered monarch butterfly to reside

in the community.
The project will not cost taxpayers any money. The garden
club is paying for the project
through a Butterfly Tea fundraiser on April 11 and with support
from various township businesses and organizations. The club is
also funding a park clean up
through a Clean Communities
grant.
The project would be located in
a vacant 15-foot by 20-foot section
of the park. A crushed slate walkway will wind through the garden, allowing access to all members of the community.
It would allow full access for
pedestrians, strollers and, most
importantly, it would be ADA
compliant, Giardina said.
The garden itself will include
milkweed and other plants to encourage an environment to raise
butterflies.
A two-foot fence will surround
the garden areas to keep pedestrians and bikers out of the garden.
There will also be a four-foot
bench made of recycled wood for
visitors to relax and view the butterflies.
Giardina said the garden
would not impact the other sections of the park, such as the
playground.
It would be in a quadrant of
the park that will not interfere
with the playground or any activ-

ities in the park, she said.

This is the second time council
has had an organization propose
a community project at a local
park this year. Council already
approved a memorandum of understanding with the Medford
Arts Center for installation of a
mural at Freedom Park this summer.
Like with the Freedom Park
mural, council was pleased with
the proposed butterfly garden.
Deputy Mayor Jeff Beenstock
liked the design of the garden,
but wondered if it would present
issues with maintenance.
Giardina said the Pinelands
Garden Club would be committed
to keeping the garden in excellent
condition. The club also plans to
reach out to other youth and civic
organizations to help maintain
the garden.
It will be constructed in a way
that will require minimal daily
care, Giardina said. There
would be no additional service required by the township.
The township plans to craft a
memorandum of understanding
with the Pinelands Garden Club
and approve it at an upcoming
meeting.

Ten months after the issue was
first discussed, council passed an
ordinance on first reading establishing zoning regulations for
deer fencing in the township.
The ordinance moved forward
despite pleas from some residents
to table the ordinance until the
next meeting.
Resident Kevin Sparkman
asked council to strike the deer
fencing changes from the ordinance. He disagreed with the lack
of a vegetation buffer requirement for the backyard of homes.
He feels the fences may intrude
on neighbors views in homes
with open backyard views.
It would be much more intrusive than what is allowed now,

allow residents more time to
speak out and study the ordinance.
He agreed with Sparkman, saying deer fencing could ruin the
views in developments where
backyards face a lake.
Paddling on a lake and staring
at an eight-foot fence is not an aesthetic improvement, he said.
Beenstock and Tom Corbi, both
members of the deer fencing subcommittee, said they put in a vegetation buffer requirement for
front yards only because residents they spoke to were more
concerned of the view of deer
fences from their front yard
rather than their back yard.
Sparkman also felt council
spent too much time and resources into deer fencing rather
than other issues.
Im kind of disappointed its
proceeded to this point, Sparkman said.
The deer fencing ordinance
will now be referred to the planning board for approval at its next
meeting on March 25. If the planning board approves it, the ordinance will be on councils agenda
for a public hearing and final
adoption on April 7.

Once the sun goes down, the
world looks entirely different,
said Pat Worley, president of Twilight Blue Photography, in regard
to her latest exhibit, Dusk till
Dawn. The reception for this exhibit will be held on March 27
from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the
Ameriprise Financial, Hansen
Warner Gallery located at 6 S.
Main St. in Medford.
The exhibit showcases Worleys award winning photos taken
during her favorite time to shoot,
the night. This past year, Worley
visited some of the darkest skies
in the world including the Salt
Flats of Uyuni in Bolivia, Yellowstone National Park, and the
Grand Tetons, among others.
These locations are known to
have the cleanest and purest skies
in the world, and have allowed
Worley to capture breathtaking
astrophotography images. Dusk
till Dawn features two photo-

graphs of the full arc of the Milky

Way from opposing perspectives
one from the northern hemisphere and the other from the
southern.
The exhibit is not all astrophotography. Worley has also captured the moments before and
after the stars come out to play.
An image of Medford Lakes during the blue hour after the sun
goes down, known as twilight, depicts a scene from Canoe Carnival and captures the energy of
the crowd on the lake as night
falls. Another image shows the
most southern tip of South America illuminated in pastel colors
for just a few tranquil moments
before the sun rises.
There will be refreshments at
the reception and the event is
free.
