Cemeng PSRG Milling technology is an innovative approach employing compound
milling comprising both compression roller grinding and centrifugal grinding
engineered to set up a new bench mark involving
re-design of grinding mill, its internals and also various operating parameters
effectively combined to achieve performance enhancement
1.0 What is a PSRG Mill?
PSRG mill is a compound milling combination of both Roller grinding and
Planetary/Centrifugal grinding. In PSRG Mill, the mill shell will be fitted with planetary lining.
Each liner will have a central circular hallow core. When all the liners are fitted to the shell,
the combination will form centrifugal tubes at the inner circumference of the shell. The inner
periphery of the planetary liners will function as a shell for roller grinding. The centrifugal
tubes shall have either rods or conventional media for grinding. As is known, use of Roller
will reduce the specific power consumption, thus providing margin for subsequent grinding
in planetary tubes employing balls. PSRG Mills thus effectively produce product of requisite
fineness in single pass open circuit operation. Of course, Close circuit function with a
Classifier will result in higher productivity.

2.0 Power Draw and Mill Speed:

PSRG Mills are virtually perpetual motion machines. The Power draw for PSRG Mill is sum
total of power absorbed by the roller and that absorbed by the balls grinding media in the
centrifugal grinding tubes. For free floating rollers, the mill specific energy can be considered
to be in between conventional ball mills and Horo mills. The free rolling action of the roller
and generally the balanced concentric movement of mill shell and material being ground
permits high speed operation with only a small part of the power required to operate
conventional ball and rod mills. For example, it is possible to operate a mill of 5ft diameter at
peripheral speeds ranging up to 1000 feet per minute corresponding to a rotational speed of
around 60 rpm. This is several times faster and beyond critical speed of same size
conventional ball or rod mill. For example, the grinding power of a planetary mill having a
single 5.6 inch dia grinding chamber and having a length of 2 feet orbiting at 1000 rpm on

an orbital diameter of 1 foot employing 1/16 inch diameter balls is about the same as that of
a conventional ball mill 4ft dia x 8 ft. lg rotated at 21 rpm and employing 3/8 inch dia balls.
The PSRG mills are invariably run at super-critical speeds, in the range of 150 to 400 percent
of conventional ball mills. The effective mill length generally will be not less than D for a
PSRG mill. The grinding rollers can be built -up type with varying widths as required. PSRG
mill will have material discharge ports at both ends of the mill, to ensure additional grinding
path and residence time for the material being ground. Material lifters can be incorporated
integrated to mill liners. Venting requirements of PSRG Mills are always higher than that of
conventional ball mills. A blower at each mill inlet provides sufficient amount of high
pressure air for jetting inside the mill.
3.0 Size Range of PSRG Mills:
Cemeng PSRG Mills are compact and shorter in length with l/d rarely exceeding 2.0, and are
self- supported on a heavy duty steel frame, thus eliminating strong and complicated
concrete foundation. If need be, the mill can be relocated easily. Cemeng Mills are having
many advantages compared to both conventional mills and horizontal roller grinding mills.
The mill l/d is adapted to the material grindability and mill throughput desired. Power and
capacity both vary directly with the mill length within limits. A definite amount of power is
required per meter of mill length and each meter of mill length provides a definite amount of
capacity.. The grind achieved and the capacity is directly related to the power applied. Power
a mill draws can be increased by increasing its ball charge or speed. Either a few or all the
planetary tubes can be employed for further grinding to improve fineness/particle size
distribution still limiting the overall power consumption. Free floating rollers are the norm,
but pressure rollers can be arranged. Close circuiting the mill yields higher product output.

Smaller diameter mills, with power rating up to 330KW, are Pneumatic Tyre Driven (PTD)
similar to well- known Sepro International grinding mills. The drive consists of multiple
gearboxes and electric motors directly connected and controlled through AC Variable
frequency drive. This allows fining tuning the operation of the mill based on speed and
media charge. Commercial heavy truck tyres are employed and hence easily replaceable

Medium capacity mills, with power rating up to 1000KW, are generally Hydraulic Roller
mounted type, similar to the well-known Minpro International grinding mills. In this, the shell
is mounted over support/drive shafts which have heavy duty polyurethane drive wheels; one
or several shafts are driven by means of Hydraulic Motors. This makes it possible to have
speed control of grinding operations. Besides, the mills will have very smooth start up. The
required hydraulic station can be placed in the mills neighborhood.
Higher capacity mills, with power rating beyond 1000KW, are generally mounted over slide
shoe bearings with girth gear and pinion drive arrangement, but can also have friction drive
arrangement with hydraulic drive motors when variable mill speed is desired. Maha
Hydraulics in India, are offering hydraulic motors HM25/HM30/HM36 for driving applications
related to grinding mills. These are torque arm mounted units and thus can be applied to
both trunnion drive or friction rollers.
