) units hertz (Hz) - Another common: λ) is the length in meters (m) of one cycle

Waves have several key characteristics including cycle, wavelength, period, frequency, and amplitude. The wavelength is the length of one cycle and period is the time to complete one cycle. Frequency is the number of cycles that occur in a given time period. Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a wave from its central position. Waves also have a velocity that can be calculated using the wavelength and period in the wave equation. When multiple waves pass through each other, the principle of superposition describes their interaction which can result in wave interference where peaks and troughs of waves overlap constructively or destructively.

Waves Notes:

Cycle: is a complete sequence of motion that repeat itself.

Wavelength ( ) is the length in meters (m) of one cycle
Period (T) is the time to complete 1 cycle. It is measured in seconds
Frequency (f) is the number of cycles in a given time period. It is
measure in cycle/second (1/s or s-1) units hertz (Hz). Another common
unit used for frequency is rps, revolution/ second.
Amplitude of a wave is the maximum disturbance of a wave from its
zero point (positive or negative), measure in meters (m)

Wave Equation:
-

Waves are travelling disturbances; hence, have velocity associated

with them:

However, to readjust this equation for waves, we would use:

, where lambda is wavelength and T is period
Or

The Principle of Superposition:

Sound waves move independently through the medium; however,
when they are passing through one another, the interaction between
these waves is described by the principle of superposition.

So, when waves interact with each other, it leads to wave interference,
as the point where two or more waves meet each other at a particular
point in space at the same time.
