Mf004 - Introduction To Probability and Statistics Tutorial 2 of Chapter 2

This document provides 10 examples of raw data and instructions to construct frequency distributions, histograms, frequency polygons, and ogives from the data. For each example, students are asked to bin the data into an appropriate frequency distribution, and represent the data visually using one or more of the following graphs: histogram, frequency polygon, or ogive. The goal is for students to practice skills in organizing raw data, constructing frequency distributions, and presenting data graphically.

MF004 INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

TUTORIAL 2 of CHAPTER 2

Targets of Tutorial 2:
By the end of this tutorial, students should able:
i. To construct the frequency distribution from raw data using proper procedures.
ii. To construct the frequency distribution from raw data using information given.
iii. To present the frequency distribution using 3 major common graphs, i.e. Histogram,
Frequency Polygon, and Ogive.

1) The following shows the number of contracts signed in a year 2011 from 40 companies.
Based on the data given, construct a frequency distribution, and draw a histogram to
represent these data.

36 17 17 23 38 22 16 29

2) The following data records the amount of electric bills (to the nearest RM) for the past one
month for 30 families. Construct a frequency distribution and hence present the data by a
frequency polygon.

frequency distribution using 7 classes. Hence, represent the data by a histogram and
frequency polygon.

5) The following data gives the time (in minutes) needed by 30 students to complete their
assignments. Construct a cumulative frequency distribution using 7 classes. Hence present
these data by an ogive.

22.8 27.0 27.9 30.4 33.4 24.8 27.2 27.9 31.1 33.9

6) The following data shows the duration (in days) between the time the electric bill was issued
and the payment was made.

22 15 29 41 14 35 21 8 25 36
1 11 38 11 32 17 5 23 28 16

18 31 30 16 27 26 12 10 18 20
17 4 20 20 9 33 28 6 24 15

Construct a frequency distribution with a class interval of 7 days and the lower class limit
of the first lower class limit is 1 day. Hence, represent the data by a histogram and
frequency polygon.

7) The yearly rainfall (in centimeter square) for a 30-year period is as follows. Construct a
frequency distribution using class width of 3 and the first lower class limit is 28. Hence,
draw a histogram and frequency polygon to present these data.
