The document discusses software defined electronics (SDE), a concept that transforms all high frequency analog signals into a baseband and implements applications through software. SDE integrates concepts like complex envelopes, software defined radio, virtual instrumentation, and embedded systems. It allows signals to be transformed to the lowest possible sampling rate while maintaining information. SDE provides flexibility for applications like cognitive radio through software-defined implementations. Adopting SDE requires changes to electronics engineering education with a focus on system design, mathematics, and embedded operations over analog circuit design. The talk will overview SDE, its derivation method, a SDE platform, and need for updated education paradigms.

About the presenter Gza Kolumbn, Fellow of IEEE, 2005, received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary, and his C.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. After his graduation, he spent 15 years in the professional telecommunications industry, where he developed microwave circuits and PLL-based frequency synthesizers. Later he was involved in many system Software Defined Electronics: A Concept That Is Changing the engineering projects from SCPC-type satellite telecommunications systems to microwave terrestrial digital radio systems. After joining the university education he showed that chaos may exist in Teaching, Researching, New Product Development and autonomous PLLs and established Non-coherent chaotic communications as a brand new research Manufacturing Paradigm in Electronics Engineering Completely direction. He developed DCSK and FM-DCSK, the most popular chaotic modulation schemes. Two of his papers written on chaotic communications have been ranked in the top-cited IEEE Trans. CAS-I articles. He has been a visiting professor and researcher to UC Berkeley, PolyU and CityU in Hong Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering2017 Kong, University College Dublin and Cork, Ireland, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, INSA-LATTIS Laboratory, Toulouse, France, TU Dresden, Germany, Beijing Jiaotong University. He has been Venue: Billings Room providing consulting service for many companies from National Instruments to Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. He is a full professor at the Pzmny Pter Catholic University, Budapest, DATE: Thursday, 4 May 2017 Hungary and is an Adjunct Prof. at the Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. He served as an IEEE CAS Distinguished Lecturer for the time period of 2013-2014. TIME: 10:00 - 11:00AM Upcoming Seminars Abstract An Introduction to CERI the Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation. In the state-of-the art electronic equipment and systems every application is implemented in the by Dr. Carolyn Williams (CEO, Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation) software (SW). The old school engineering where information processing has been done by analog and more - Click here for details of future seminars circuits is fading away. In Software Defined Electronics (SDE) every high frequency band-pass analog signal is transformed into the BaseBand (BB) and the different applications are implemented in BB, entirely in SW. This approach is more and more frequently used everywhere in our time, from Software Defined Radio (SDR) to Virtual Instrumentation (VI). SDE concept integrates many already known ideas such as complex envelopes, SDR, VI, embedded systems and OSI layered architecture into one single framework. It also includes a systematic approach for the derivation of BB equivalents. In the majority of cases the signals carrying the information or to be measured are RF/microwave/optical frequency band-pass analog signals. The band-pass property makes the substitution of each analog signal processing task possible with a low- frequency digital one without any loss of information. In SDE, all bandpass signals are transformed into BB by a universal hardware (HW) device and every application is implemented by a software defined BB equivalent. SDE concept uses (i) the lowest sampling rate attainable theoretically and (ii) the same universal HW transformer in every application. The software defined implementation provides that huge level of flexibility which is required in many sophisticated applications, for example, in cognitive radio or reconfigurable systems. Because both the parameters and the system configurations can be changed in SW, the SDE approach is a must in scientific research and new product development. The SDE implementation requires a complete change in the Electronics Engineering (EE) teaching paradigm. A top-down approach has to be used where the main emphasis is laid on the system-level design and analysis, mathematics and embedded operation. The talk will survey the SDE concept, will give a step-by-step approach for the derivation of BB equivalents, will introduce a PXI-based universal SDE platform and will demonstrate its use in scientific research. Finally the need for a complete change in EE teaching and learning paradigm will be discussed.
