Aim of The Project

The document outlines a proposed mobile application to help commuters navigate public transportation. It would allow users to input a source and destination to receive route and schedule options for traveling between locations by bus. The application would provide real-time updates on travel progress and estimated time of arrival through voice messages. Literature on existing transportation prediction models and scheduling systems is reviewed to inform the design of the new application. A methodology is proposed where users could search by region, plan trips with multiple route alternatives and time options, and access information like bus numbers and stop locations.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

The aim is to implement a mobile application which helps the

commuters to reach the destination using public transportation.

i
SCOPE OF THE WORK

It’s a mobile application which will be useful to mainly travelers who

prefer to travel by public transportation. People from different place visit
different places around the world. So, our application helps for those who
wish to travel by public transportation for particular region.

Even with the help of map, few times have to face hurdles to reach the
destination on time. So, by our app one can easily locate their destination
with considerable time limit.

ii
INTRODUCTION

We all travel and when we do, we find it difficult to identify the bus
numbers or bus routes to reach our destination. This application will help
us if we give the source and destination address with timings, platform
number in city bus stand and periodic remainder of on-going
traveled distance through a voice message .

iii
LITERATURE SURVEY

 The design of the navigation system was driven by a set of premises

that distinguish it from other navigation solutions.
The service should be deployable on short term, and not in a far future.
 Deployment cost for the service provider should be efficient.
 Usage cost should be low considering currently common
communication costs.
 Service should be easily adaptable and extendable to a fast changing
reality.

  Lin and Zeng proposed a set of bus arrival time prediction

algorithms for a transit traveler information system implemented in
Blacksburg, Virginia. Four algorithms were introduced with different
assumptions on input data and were shown to outperform several
algorithms from the literature. Their algorithms, however, did not
consider the effect of traffic congestion and dwell time at bus
stations.

 Kidwell presented an algorithm for predicting bus arrival times

based on real-time vehicle location. The algorithm worked by
dividing each route into zones and recording the time that each bus
passed through each zone. Predictions were based on the most
recent observation of a bus passing through each zone. However, this
algorithm was not suitable for large cities where both travel time and
dwell time could be subject to large variations. Generally speaking,
these models are reliable only when the traffic pattern in the area of
interest is relatively stable. One of their main limitations is that it
requires an extensive set of historical data, which may not be
available in practice, especially when the traffic pattern varies
significantly over time.

iv
 In 2002 a scheduling model based on interrelationship between
passenger trip demands and bus trip supplies for inter-city bus carriers
have been studied by Yan and Chen. They achieved by adjustment
frequency of buses could decreasing journey time and fleet size. They
also found by adjustment frequency of buses duration peak-hour traffic
can reducing operating cost (Yan and Chen 2002).

 Van Oudheusden and Zhu in 1995 have proposed a trip frequency

scheduling for determination of trip frequencies problem which this way
reduced trip frequency duration different period. They achieved that
overcrowding of buses can depend by insufficient planning in addition
fleet size and traffic congestion (van Oudheusden and Zhu 1995).

 In 2009 Chen et al. analyzed bus operation reliability at the stop, route
and network levels. They achieved by increasing distance between a bus
stop and the origin terminal, reliability of bus service will be declined.
Also, bus service reliability greatly decreases when this distance to
increase to more than 30 km (Chen et al. 2009).

 Fang et al. in 2010 considered a real-time scheduling method for a

variable-route bus. The proposed method was consideration on both the
cost and the passengers. This model reduced cost and average waiting
time of the passengers (Fang et al. 2010).

  Identification of the location of the origins and destinations

(terminus).
 Establishing relationship between those origins and destinations
with transit stages.
 Identification of transit service schedules, vehicle locations, and
transfer points.
Identification of optimal paths.

v
 In today's life, Time and Money are very important; no one wants
to waste their time and money, be it travelling on a long route,
instead of a short route. Or it can be giving extra money for public
transportation as you were unaware of the cost of the
transportation.

 Google maps are a web based navigation system developed by

Google. Google maps include broad, precise maps in 210 countries
and territories. It allows the users to search for different places
around the world. It also provides some information about different
place which the user wants.

 M-Indicator is one of the most widely used urban transportation

mobile application in Mumbai. M-Indicator covers all the major
public transport details of the city of Mumbai.

 Route4Me route planner are familiar with the Google maps routing
system where one have to enter destination in sequence and the
routing system will provide the route as per sequence you have
provided. In Route4Me route planner you visit the destination as per
the sequence, you requested.

vi
PROPOSED METHODOLOGY

In our project we are going to develop an application which is

useful for public transportation. People choose public transportation
because it’s cheaper than owning a vehicle. One can navigate from
place to place with interactions with other people who may have
common destination. Exchange of information about places with
new environment is possible. One may need not to worry about
expecting vehicle break-downs resulting in unusual reaching of
destination.

 First the users have to decide which area, so the app can locate the
region on which user is interested on.
 User should choose his/her initial and final destination.
Including the time on which he wants to travel.
 Then, the possible outcomes of different bus paths to the chosen
destination will be shown.
 Then he can pick the bus number & time, then he can get the
information (bus stand name, bus-stand platform number, pictures of
destination etc…) about where he can get the respected chosen bus
from bus-stand/platform.
 Not always direct path will be provided, so we have to include the
main bus stand and its junction’s path with the respected request.
 For every destination, we have alternate routes.
There will be periodic remainder through voice message of
remaining distance , the user has to reach.
 We provide possible time constraint depending on the user’s
request ,from which he can choose from.
 We provide the gallery of images for referencing the place.

FINAL OUTCOME

vii
An mobile application which helps the travelers especially public
transportation users(bus) to navigate from their original position to
destination with help of bus routes, images of destination(places) with
many options with different paths and specific timings with the guidance
of voice message.
So one can manage the time constraint to reach his/her destination by bus,
without time delay and constructive plan.
