Hollow Pot Design

This document summarizes the design of a hollow pot floor slab. Key details include: - The slab spans 5m x 7m with ribs running in the shorter direction - Design assumptions include a C25 concrete, 12mm diameter bottom reinforcement bars, and a total factored load of 6.26kN/m - Shear and moment calculations are shown - Two 12mm diameter bars are designed as the bottom reinforcement over the midspan - Shear capacity is sufficient with no additional reinforcement required - Deflection checks out with an allowable span greater than 5000mm

Hollow pot design

This post details the design procedure of a hollow pot floor slab (all references to BS 8110-1:
1997).

{Cl 3.6, Hollow pot system sketch}

DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS
Material data

Concrete class = C25 i.e. 28 day cube strength of 25N/mm2

Reinforcement grade = 460N/mm2

Unit weight of concrete = 24kN/m3

Live load = 1.5kN/m2

Dead load factor, γg = 1.4

Live load factor, γq = 1.6

75mm of screed (unit weight = 24kN/m3)

Hollow pot system dimensions

For this example the following values have been used.

h = 70mm

ha = 300mm

a = 500mm

a1 =120mm

The size of hollow pot used is 380mm (width) x 230mm (depth) x 300mm (length).

A panel spanning 5m x 7m has been considered (with the ribs running in the shorter direction).

LOADING
Dead load

Slab topping = 24kN/m3 x 0.070m x 0.500m = 0.84kN/m

Hollow pot = 0.64kN/m {standardised for a 380 x 230 x 300mm hollow pot}

Rib load = 24kN/m3 x 0.230m x 0.120m = 0.66kN/m

Screeding = 24kN/m3 x 0.075m x 0.500m = 0.90kN/m

Total live load, qk = 0.84kN/m + 0.64kN/m + 0.66kN/m + 0.90kN/m = 3.04kN/m

Live load

Residential = 1.5kN/m2 x 0.500m = 0.75kN/m

Partitions = 1.0kN/m2 x 0.500m = 0.50kN/m

Total live load, qk = 0.75kN/m + 0.50kN/m = 1.25kN/m (per rib)

Design load
(1.4 x dead load) + (1.6 x live load) = (1.4 x 3.04kN/m) + (1.6 x 1.25kN/m) = 6.26kN/m

Design moment

Design moment, M = wl2 ÷ 8 = [6.26kN/m x (5m)2]÷ 8 = 19.56kNm

{Cl 3.4.4} DESIGN FOR BENDING

Assumed bar diameter, Φ = 12mm

Minimum cover to reinforcement = 25mm

Effective depth, d = ha – c – Φ/2 = 300 – 25 – 12/2 = 269mm

Effective width, beff = 500mm {Cl 3.4.1.5}

K = M ÷ bd2fcu = (19.56kNm x 106) ÷ [500mm x {(269m)2 x 25N/mm2) = 0.022

0.022 < 0.156, therefore compression reinforcement is not required

z = d[0.5 + √(0.25 – K/0.9)] = 269[0.5 + √(0.25 – 0.022/0.9)] = 262mm

0.95d = 0.95 x 269 = 256mm

Therefore, take z as 256mm.

Required area of reinforcement, As,req = M γM ÷ fy z

= [19.56kNm x 106 x 1.05) ÷ (460N/mm2 x 256mm)

= 174mm2

Therefore, provide 2T12 bars at the bottom (i.e. As,prov = 226mm2).

Reinforcement over support to control cracking = 25% of reinforcement at midspan

i.e. 0.25 x 226mm2 = 57mm2

Provide T8 bars at 200mm spacing over supports (i.e. As,prov = 251mm2)

{Cl 3.6.4} SHEAR DESIGN

Design shear load, V = wl ÷ 2 = 6.26kN/m x 5m ÷ 2 = 15.65kN

Average width of rib, bv = 120mm + 30mm = 150mm {Cl 3.6.4.3}

Design shear stress, v = V ÷ bv d = (15.65 x 103) ÷ (150mm x 269mm) = 0.39N/mm2

100As,prov ÷ bv d = (100 x 226m2) ÷ (150mm x 269mm) = 0.56

{Table 3.8} Therefore, vc = 0.55N/mm2 > 0.39N/mm2 (no shear reinforcement is required).

{Cl 3.6.5} DEFLECTION CHECK

{Table 3.9} Basic span/d ratio = 16

b = 120mm + 30mm + 30mm = 180mm {Cl 3.6.5.1}

M÷ bd2 = (19.56kNm x 106) ÷ [180mm x (269mm)2] = 1.50

{Eq. 8} Design service stress, fs = (2 x fy x As,req) ÷ (3 x As,prov)

(2 x 460N/mm2 x 174mm2) ÷ (3 x 226mm2) = 236N/mm2

{Table 3.10, Eq. 7} Therefore, modification factor for tension reinforcement, M.F = 1.39

Allowable span = M.F x span/d ratio x d = 1.39 x 16 x 269mm = 5983mm > 5000mm

Therefore, OK in deflection.
