The sablay gets its inspiration from the Muslim malong but incorporates
various traditional elements found in other Philippine cultures. Running
through the sablay are geometric motifs of indigenous Philippine tribes, which
border the initials of the University interpreted in alibata characters, the
ancient Philippine alphabet. Alternating with the initials of UP is an ukkit or
ukir as an accent. The basic colors used are maroon and forest green, the official
colors of the University of the Philippines.
The sablay is worn over Barong Tagalog and black pants (for men) or white or
ecru dress, midcalf to ankle length (for women). The dress should have sleeves
matched with closed shoes.
The sablay is worn initially over the right shoulder. After the President has
conferred the degree, thesablay is moved from the right to the left shoulder
without being taken off. The College Marshals shall demonstrate the proper
way to do this in the assembly area.
The sablay is an academic costume and should be worn only with academic
regalia (i.e., university medals for academic achievement awarded to summas,
magnas & cum laudes) and a minimum of jewelry. Corsages and leis are not
part of the academic costume and thereof they should not be worn with the
sablay during the ceremony.
