The key takeaways are that the lesson introduces students to binary and decimal number systems, arithmetic operations in binary, and how computers store data using binary.

The objectives of the lesson are for students to understand how to convert between decimal and binary numbers, apply arithmetic operations to binary numbers, and appreciate how computers use binary to store data.

The main concepts covered in the lesson are binary and decimal number systems, digits, bytes, storage devices, and arithmetic operations in binary like addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

STEAM Applicable Standards:

Science Standard: Science: Metric system conversion. Discuss how volume or capacity in boxes,
bottles, or other containers can be described. Link this to the description of capacity in hard
disks, floppy disks, and CD-ROMs
Mathematics Standard: Mathematics: Number systems, number theory, decimals, addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Language Standard: The assigning of definitions to particular terms and the practice of using
them in repetitive contexts.

General Objectives: Students should be able to:

Understand how to convert the number between decimal and binary, and apply arithmetic

operations to binary numbers, also appreciating the binary code decimals and binary number.
Most importantly, to add, multiply and subtract binary numbers for the aspect of information

Technology.

Specific Objective: Students should be able to:

1. Define the term Binary Number System 80% accurately, after a song audio.
2. After a discussion, understand what a Decimal or Denary Number System is 70 %
accurately.
3. Described space on a storage device, 81 % accurately after a short PowerPoint.
4. Willingness to learn a new number system.
5. Appreciation for the way a computer might "remember" or "think" of data or information.

Content:
Decimal or Denary - Divided or counted by tens.
Binary coded decimal (BCD) is a system of writing numerals that assigns a four-digit binary

code to each digit 0 through 9 in a decimal (base-10) numeral. The four-bit BCD code for any

particular single base-10 digit is its representation in binary notation

Number Systems - various systems used to write quantities. A number system is defined by the

number of different symbols it uses. The decimal system requires ten different symbols, or digits,

and is a base-10 system.

Binary - Characterized by or consisting of two parts or components; twofold. A binary number

system uses two symbols: 0 and 1.

Digit - One of the characters used to indicate a whole number (unit) in a numbering system.

Since a digit stored in the computer can take only two values, it is a binary digit. Eight digits

make a byte.

Every piece of data in a computer is stored as a number. For example, letters are converted to

numbers, and photographs are converted to a large set of numbers that indicate the color and

brightness of each pixel. The numbers are then converted to binary numbers. Conventional

numbers use ten digits, from 0-9, to represent all possible values. Binary numbers use two digits,

0 and 1, to represent all possible values. The numbers 0 through 8 look like this as binary

numbers: 0, 1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 110, 111, 1000. Binary numbers are very long, but with binary

numbers any value can be stored as a series of items which are true (1) or false (0), such as

North/South, Charged/Uncharged, or Light/Dark.

Classroom Safety:
• Chairs, wastebaskets, electrical cords, and other articles should not be left where they will
become a tripping hazard.
• Desk drawers, cabinet doors and file drawers should not be left open while unattended.
Pull only one drawer out at a time. Heavier items should be loaded in the lower file
drawers to prevent the file from tipping over.
• Do not stand in front of closed doors, which may open suddenly.
• All electrical equipment should be turned off when not in use. Always unplug electrical
equipment by grasping plug, not cord.
• See “Safe Lifting Rules” section for proper procedures when lifting.
• Pencil sharpeners should be mounted so as not to protrude.
• Promptly report all defective materials that need repair or replacement.

Activities Highlights:
Engagement:

Students will be listening attentively to a song audio that will played on Binary Number

System , then students will be asked some focus questions pertaining to the song. Then they will

be asked to construct a definition of their own on what is a Binary Number System.

Focus Questions

1. What do you understand from the song that you listen?

2. After listening to the song what are some of the terms did you hear mentioned in the

song?

3. In your own words come up with a definition of what the song is about?

Exploration:

The Students will be facilitated by the teacher with the aid of a concept map procedure,

this will asked students to come with some terms that they consider are related to term Decimal

Number System. This will give the concept to use their prior knowledge and applying it, the

students will be engage in a discussion with the teacher that will entails the teacher stating what

is Decimal Number System, which the students will give their responses and opinion on what

the understand from the meaning. This will show students how the decimal number system

intertwines with Binary Number System.

Explanation:

Students will be viewing a Power point that will be showing the students about space on a

storage device, it will entail storage devices such as Hard-drive, USB, and others. This power

point will have the pictures of the devices and amount of space that these storage devices carries.

The PowerPoint will outline how the space in the storage device, which will highlight how the

bytes is related to the Binary Number System. During the Power Point students will be asked to

take notes on the points that are showing in the power point.

Elaboration:
Students will be involved in a question and answer session that will allow them to asked

question if there is any clarification need on the lesson, this will give a more vivid understanding

of what is being taught. Then in groups of eight students will be asked to describe the space of a

storage device this will include Byte, Terabyte Gigabyte and others, with the aid of the power

point.

Evaluation:

Students will be engage in a game assessment quiz prior to the topic, this activity will be

done individually. The students will play the game on the computers in the lab, which will be an

online game that will require internet. This game will be played on Kahoot which is an

educational website for creating games.

Steps for playing Game Quiz

1. Type in the search engine Google Chrome, Kahoot.com, then press enter.

2. Once the web page is loaded, click on play game.

3. Then you will be given a code to enter in.

4. After entering the code, the game will asked you to enter your name, enter your name and

click begin.

5. Then the questions of the game will load.

Rules of the games

1. No cheating
2. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner will receive tokens.
