    What is Touch Typing?

    Touch typing is a way of describing typing “proficiency” where the


    typist intuitively knows the keyboard so well that he or she does
    not need to look at the keyboard to press the correct keys. In
    theory, “touch typing” may be considered a goal as well as an
    actual educational technique to master the computer keyboard.

    A good friend of mine, Mr. Yuri Belous of Kiev, Ukraine, has


    dedicated the better part of the last several years of his life to
    bringing the general public a first-class typing-education program
    called Rapid Typing Tutor. This software has typing exercises with
    the intention of helping you, the typing student, progress until
    you have mastered the touch-typing technique. For a warm-up,
    Yuri recommends that you type basic horizontal parts of the
    keyboard such as “ASDF”, GHJK”, “QWER”, “RTYU” and “UIOP”, to
    name a few. After completing this warm-up exercise, then you
    can utilize the exercises that Yuri has provided in Rapid Typing
    Tutor.

    When you download the program from the Internet, go ahead


    and follow the basic installation instructions. When you use the
    program for the first time, make sure choose your native
    language as this will facilitate the learning process greatly.

    Another selection you should make is the choice of measuring


    your progress with Words per Minute (WPM) or Characters per
    Minute (CPM). In the USA, WPM is usually the standard measure
    while in European nations, CPM is usually the standard. Let’s now
    take a look at the basic screen that Rapid Typing displays so that
    one can become a master-typist and thus practice “touch typing”.
    Look closely at the screen-shot above of the Rapid Typing
    desktop application. Yuri has provided seven (7) unique typing
    exercise-categories that may be utilized as you practice touch-
    typing. These categories are basics, syllables, shift keys, words,
    digits and symbols, (simple) text, and the numeric keypad.
    Remember that touch typing is both a goal as well as an
    educational approach to typing. I have used Rapid Typing over
    the past year and highly recommend this program. In fact, I
    enjoyed this program so much that I wrote the User Guide for the
    program! Touch typing – means learning the computer keyboard
    so well that you do not need to look at the keyboard as you are
    typing and still create documents with near perfection as you
    type. Rapid Typing Tutor by Yuri Belous is an amazing program
    that is easy to use and will help you become a true “touch typist”.
