WRITING SECTION
Read the following passage and answer the following questions:
Maybe you exercise to build your biceps, or flatten your belly. Or maybe you work out to ward
off the big killers like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. But how about sweating to improve
your mind? "Exercise is the single best thing you can do for your brain in terms of mood,
memory, and learning," says Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey, author of the
book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. "Even 10 minutes of
activity changes your brain.
" If you need a little extra incentive to lace up those sneakers, here are ways that exercise can
boost your brainpower. Jumping on the treadmill or cross trainer for 30 minutes can blow off
tension by increasing levels of "soothing" brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and
norepinephrine. What's fascinating, though, is that exercise may actually work on a cellular level
to reverse stress' toll on our aging process, according to a 2010 study from the University of
California—San Francisco. The researchers found that stressed-out women who exercised
vigorously for an average of 45 minutes over a three-day period had cells that showed fewer
signs of aging compared to women who were stressed and inactive. Working out also helps keep
us from ruminating "by altering blood flow to those areas in the brain involved in triggering us to
relive these stressful thoughts again and again," says study coauthor Elissa Epel, an associate
professor of psychiatry at UCSF.
Research also suggests that burning off 350 calories three times a week through sustained,
sweat-inducing activity can reduce symptoms of depression about as effectively as
antidepressants. That may be because exercise appears to stimulate the growth of neurons in
certain brain regions damaged by depression. What's more, animal studies have found that
getting active boosts the production of brain molecules that improve connections between nerve
cells, thereby acting as a natural antidepressant. And a 2010 study found that three sessions of
yoga per week boosted participants' levels of the brain chemical GABA, which typically
translates into improved mood and decreased anxiety. Yoga can be used to complement—not
substitute—drug treatment for depression, the researchers said.
a) Based on your reading of the passage above create a set of notes. Use appropriate
abbreviations. Give the notes a suitable title.
b) Write a summary based on the notes in not more than 80 words.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
It is surprising that sometimes we don’t listen to what people say to us. We hear them, but we
don’t listen to them. I was curious to know how hearing is different from listening. I had thought
both were synonyms, but gradually, I realised there is a big difference between the two words.
Hearing is a physical phenomenon. Whenever somebody speaks, the sound waves generated
reach you, and you definitely hear whatever is said to you. However, even if you hear something,
it doesn’t always mean that you actually understand whatever is being said. Paying attention to
whatever you hear means you are really listening. Consciously using your mind to understand
whatever is being said is listening.
Diving deeper, I found that listening is not only hearing with attention, but is much more than
that. Listening is hearing with full attention, and applying our mind. Most of the time, we listen
to someone, but our minds are full of needless chatter and there doesn’t seem to be enough space
to accommodate what is being spoken.
We come with a lot of prejudices and preconceived notions about the speaker or the subject on
which he is talking. We pretend to listen to the speaker, but deep inside, we sit in judgement and
are dying to pronounce right or wrong, true or false, yes or no. Sometimes, we even come
prepared with a negative mindset of proving the speaker wrong. Even if the speaker says nothing
harmful, we are ready to pounce on him with our own version of things.
What we should ideally do is listen first with full awareness. Once, we have done that, we can
decide whether we want to make a judgement or not. Once we do that, communication will be
perfect and our interpersonal relationship will become so much better. Listening well doesn’t
mean one has to say the right thing at the right moment. In fact, sometimes if words are left
unspoken, there is a feeling of tension and negativity. Therefore, it is better to speak out your
mind, but do so with awareness after listening to the speaker with full concentration.
Let’s look at this in another way. When you really listen, you imbibe not only what is being
spoken, but you also understand what is not spoken as well. Most of the time we don’t really
listen even to people who really matter to us. That’s how misunderstandings grow among
families, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters.
(A) On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it, using headings and
sub-headings. Use recognizable abbreviations (wherever necessary – minimum four) and a
format you consider suitable. Also supply an appropriate title to it.
Q23. Two particles, each having a mass of 5g and charge 1.0 X 10-7 C, stay in limiting equilibrium on a horizontal table
with a separation of 10 cm between them. The coefficient of friction between each particle and the table is the same.
Find the value of the coefficient.
Q24. A vertical electric field of magnitude 4.00 X 105 NC-1 just prevents a water droplet of mass 1.00 X 10-4 Kg from
falling. Find the charge on the droplet.
Q25. A charged particle of mass 1.0 g is suspended through a silk thread of length 40 cm in a horizontal electric field of
4.0 X 104 NC-1. If the particle stays at a distance of 24 cm from the wall in equilibrium, find the charge on the particle.
