Tutorial 1 of JAN18
MENDELIAN GENETICS I
Student’s Guide:
At university level, the tutor facilitates student learning without spoon-feeding. Therefore,
you are expected to:
1. Read your textbook, attempt the questions before the tutorial
2. You may enter the class and sign your attendance after showing your tutor that all
tutorial questions have been completed
3. Write answers on board if you wish to receive tutor feedback (no answer, no
feedback)
4. Be independent: consult textbooks or dictionaries on your own first before asking the
tutor
5. All questions are compulsory. 1 mark reflects 1 answer point. (No half mark is
awarded in the exam).
(iv) An allele whose trait will only be expressed if two copies of it are
present. (1 mark)
(vi) A genetic tool that can be used to predict the outcome of the crosses.
(1 mark)

Q2. In rabbits, spotted coat (R) is dominant to solid color (r), and black (B) is dominant to
brown (b). These loci are not linked. A brown, spotted rabbit from a pure line is
mated to a solid black one, also from a pure line.
(b) What would be the genotype and phenotype of the F1 generation? (2 marks)
F1 Genotype [1]
F1 Phenotype [1]
(c) Using a Punnett square, show the expected F2 genotypes and state the
phenotypic ratio of the F2 after selfing F1. (6 marks)

Q3. (a) In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, vestigial wings, with allele l and
hairy body with allele h, are produced by two recessive genes located on
different chromosomes. The normal alleles, long wings, L and hairless body, H
are dominant.
(i) Give the genotype and phenotype of F1 progeny obtained from a cross
between a vestigial-winged, hairy male and a normal, homozygous
female. (4 marks)
(ii) If the F1 from this cross are permitted to mate randomly among
themselves, what phenotypic ratio would be expected in the F2
generation? Use the Punnet square to show your working. (4 marks)
(b) A pure-breeding plant with long stem and wrinkled leaves is crossed with a
pure-breeding plant with short stem and normal leaves. All the F1 plants have
long stem and normal leaves. When a test cross is carried out on the F1 plants,
the following results are obtained.
(i) Determine the recessive traits for the two characters. (2 marks)
(iii) Use a Punnett square to show how the results of the test cross are
obtained. (5 marks)

Q4. (a) Among the characters that Mendel studied in pea plants were flower colour
and height. Both traits were determined by two different genes with each of a
pair of alleles. The allele for purple colour and tallness are dominant. Two
flowers were crossed and the resultant F1 generations were as follows: 225 tall
purple; 70 short purple; 220 tall white; 80 short white. Using the symbol T =
tall, t = short, P = purple, p = white, answer the following questions.
(ii) List all types of gametes produced by each parent as a result of random
assortment. (3 marks)
(iii) Using a Punnett square, show the F1 generation and their phenotypic
ratios. (4 marks)
