    SEKATEN

    Sekaten is a preliminary ceremony of the anniversary of the birth of the Great Prophet Muhammad SAW.
    Held on the 5th to the 12th of the same month. Besides at Keraton Yogyakarta, Similar events are also
    held at Keraton Surakarta.

    Sekaten ceremony involve 'Sekaten Sepisan' namely the sound of two gamelan instruments Kyai
    Nogowilogo and Kyai Guntur Madu, then giving alms 'Ngarso Dalem' Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono (HB) X
    in the form of 'udhik-udhik'(spread coins) and then he appointed the two gamelan to Masjid Agung
    Yogyakarta and closed with Grebeg.

    Almost every year, the people of Yogyakarta and Solo and surrounding areas feel organized sekaten
    ceremony. Even the concept of sekaten (and night market celebrations) in recent years it has been
    changed according to the times.

    But have we ever looked at the history of this sekaten celebration? Beginning in the year 1939 Caka or
    1477 Masehi, Raden Patah as Duke of Demak Bintara Regency with the support of the guardians to build
    the Demak Mosque.

    Furthermore, based on the results of the trustees' deliberations, there was a continuous Islamic activity
    for 7 days before the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. In order for these activities to attract the
    attention of the people, there were two sets of fruit gamelan by Sunan Giri bringing the works of the
    trustees, especially Sunan Kalijaga.

    After participating in the activity, people who want to embrace Islam are led to pronounce two
    sentences of shahada (syahadatain). From the word Syahadatain, the term sekaten emerged as a result
    of changes in pronunciation. Sekaten continues to grow and is held regularly every year as the
    development of the Kingdom of Demak becomes an Islamic Kingdom.

    Similarly, when the Islamic Kingdom shifted to Mataram and when the Islamic Kingdom of Mataram was
    divided into two (Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta and Kasunanan Surakarta), Sekaten continues to be held
    regularly every year as an Islamic cultural heritage.

    In Kasultanan ngayogyakarta, the celebration of Sekaten which continues to grow from year to year
    basically has three core points which include:

    1. He sounded two gamelan instruments (Kanjeng Kyai Nagawilaga andKanjeng Kyai Guntur Madu) at the
    Kagungan Dalem Pagongan Masjid Agung Yogyajarta for 7 consecutive days, except Thursday night until
    Friday afternoon.

    2. The commemoration of the birth of the Great Prophet Muhammad SAW on the 11 Maulud, housed in
    the Grand mosque of the Grand Mosque, with a reading of the Prophet's history by Abdi Dalem, the
    Sultanate, relatives, officials, and the people.
    3. Giving alms Ngarsa Dalem Sampean Dalem Ingkang Sinuwun Kanjeng Sultan, in the form of Hajad
    Dalem Gunungan in the Garebeg ceremony as the summit ceremony of Sekaten.

    The supporting activity of the event was the holding of the Sekaten Celebration Night Market for 39
    days, this event which became an attraction for the people of Yogyakarta and outside of Yogyakarta.

    In the night market on sekaten ceremony, have many very interesting games, one example is kora kora,
    tranpolin, ghost house, demon tong, and fishing. In the night market on sekaten, also have many
    delicious and tasty snacks, one example is bolangbaling, kerak telur, sosis and tempura, and have
    refreshing drinks.

    For the price is very cheap, from child to old, can buy every food and drink in night market on sekaten
    ceremony.
