The document provides installation, operation and maintenance instructions for a deflection-type weight indicator system used to measure line loads on rigs and hoists.

The main components of the weight indicator system are the box-mounted gauge, deadline diaphragm and hydraulic hose.

The weight indicator system measures line loads by using the deflection of a diaphragm and hydraulic fluid pressure to move a pointer on the gauge dial.

4 Deflection-type Weight Indicator System Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Manual
1 Introduction
This manual contains installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for
the AOI Instrumentation Deflection-type Weight Indicator System.

Description

The weight indicator system measures the line load on portable or permanent
rig and hoist installations. The weight indicator system consists of the
following main components:
■ Box-mounted gauge
■ Deadline diaphragm
■ Hydraulic hose

Chapter 1. Introduction

How the weight indicator system works

The gauge, hose, and diaphragm are assembled, charged, and tested at the
factory before shipment.

The gauge includes a set of ten load indicator dials, calibrated for particular
line sizes and numbers of line. Dials are available calibrated in pounds,
kilograms, and decanewtons. The extra dials are stored in the gauge behind
the front dial.

The gauge is calibrated for use with the following types of 6 x 25 line:
■ FW
■ IWRC
■ FCIPS
■ EIPS

Note
Using the gauge with a line the gauge is not calibrated for can produce
inaccurate readings.

How the weight indicator system works

The load on the line exerts pressure on the deadline diaphragm, which
produces hydraulic pressure in the gauge. This hydraulic pressure operates the
bourdon tube and movement assemblies in the gauge, producing a reading on
the dial in direct proportion to the amount of pressure exerted. The weight
pointer is black and indicates the total load on the derrick or mast. The vernier
pointer is red and indicates the vernier scale.

Notes
Use the length of pipe required to raise the box to the drill operator’s
eye level. (The pipe must be at least 3 feet 6 inches long.)

Mount the box in a location with the least amount of rig vibration
possible.

1. Weld a pipe (approximately 6 inches long, threaded on one end) to the rig
floor in front of the drill operator, with the threaded end up.

2. Screw the female end of a 2-inch hex union onto the threaded end of the
pipe.

3. Tighten a 3-foot (minimum) section of pipe (threaded on both ends) to the

box.

4. Slide the large nut onto the 3-foot pipe; then tighten the male end of the
hex union.

Alternate mounting method

Instead of welding the short section of pipe to the rig floor, bolt or weld a
flange to the rig floor; then connect the 3-foot section to the flange (instead of
to a short section of pipe).

2. Position the diaphragm on the line so that the center of the diaphragm is at
the same height as the center of the dial on the gauge. The diaphragm
and the gauge must be at the same height in order for readings to be
correct.

Note
If it is not possible to mount the diaphragm and the gauge at the same
height, see “Compensating for inaccurate readings” on page 18.

Make sure the concave center of the diaphragm’s deflection plug is

aligned with the cable. If necessary, place a piece of wood on the cable
and tap it with a hammer to make sure the diaphragm is seated properly.

4. Detach the dials and slip them over the pointers, one by one.

5. Locate the dial you need.

6. Replace the dials over the pointers one by one, with the correct dial on
top.

7. Replace the dial screws, glass, ring, and retaining screws.

Caution When you reassemble the glass, ring, and screws, make sure the
pointers do not touch each other, the dial, or the glass.

Determining the true load on the derrick

The load on the derrick is greater than the load shown by the gauge.
Determine the true load on the derrick as follows:

6 lines reeving: 8/6 x gauge reading = load on derrick

8 lines reeving: 10/8 x gauge reading = load on derrick

10 lines reeving: 12/10 x gauge reading = load on derrick

12 lines reeving: 14/12 x gauge reading = load on derrick

Compensating for inaccurate readings

When it is necessary to place the diaphragm on the deadline more than 2 feet
higher or lower than the center of the gauge dial, the red pointer and the black
pointer read higher or lower accordingly. If this situation occurs, contact AOI
Instrumentation for assistance.

11. Pump fluid through the system until all the air in the system has been
removed and clean fluid flows freely.

Note
Keep the hand pump cup at least half full of fluid throughout the
pumping process so air is not pumped into the system.

12. Replace the drain plug on the diaphragm.

13. Use the C-clamp to clamp the diaphragm to a solid steel bar
(approximately 1 inch in diameter).

15. Place a 3/32-inch shim between the machined surface of the diaphragm
cover and the deflection plug.

When the weight pointer on the gauge reads 20 PSI, clearance between
the diaphragm cover and the deflection plug should accommodate a 3/32-
inch shim.

When the weight pointer on the gauge reads 22 PSI, the shim should be
tight and impossible to remove by hand.

16. When the shim is too tight to be removed by hand, close both dampers on
the gauge by turning them clockwise as far as they will go.

17. On the gauge, remove the hand pump from the drain plug and replace the
tee cap.

18. Remove the shim when the C-clamp is loose enough to allow its removal.
Remember or write down the PSI reading on the weight indicator at the
point where you can remove the shim.

19. Carefully drain very small amounts of fluid at the drain plug by
continuing to tighten and loosen the C-clamp with the shim behind the
plug until the shim is tight at a reading of 20 PSI and removable at a
reading of 17 PSI.
