Exercise Sheets Perceptual Positions Exercise 1
Note: 2nd position is definitely not “If I were you … “ that is first position.
2 people, A & B
1. A tell a story about something that happened to you recently. It needs to be a
story where you felt a lot of emotions of any sort – frustrated, delighted, laughed
your head off, felt hurt or rejected, any emotion will do. Keep talking for a full six
minutes.
2. B begin listening in first position for 2 minutes. Then move to 2nd position and
really try to ‘be’ A as you listen and get into A’s world completely. Do this for 2
minutes as well. Then for the last 2 minutes, detach completely, lean back and
listen from third position evaluating the relationship between you and A and
thinking about whether or not you are all learning what you are supposed to learn
from doing this exercise etc..
3. Take 2 minuets to discuss how this felt and anything else you need to discuss
relevant to the exercise.
A, B and C
A - describe a recent incident in which you felt frustrated or it didn’t go like you
wanted it to or something went wrong and you didn’t know how to fix it or what to
do about it.
B – listen carefully, get into rapport and get involved in the story. This is to help A
relax and forget that C is taking notes.
C – Listen sharply for ONLY representation language. Do not pay any attention to
the actual story no matter how interesting it might be. Write down every rep word
that A says.
Remember, you are not interested in the actual story. The content is irrelevant.
Just listen carefully for predicates that indicate V, A or K. All you want is to see
where your client goes to find the information you have requested.
