1 General
1-1 Definition
The Roughness represents a measure of the microscopic status of a surface between two significant
points which are selected according to the Technological Structure of the item concerned (Metallic or
Composite).
The corresponding surface condition is determined by the Average Roughness (Ra) as measured
with a calibrated gage.
1-2 Objectives
- Unique Reference for Originators of Airbus Drawings.
- References for Manufacturing and Quality Organizations.
1-3 References
* ABD0004 - Definition Dossier
* ABD0046 - Units of Measurement
* ABD0076 - Composite parts - Surface status requirements
* ISO1302 - Technical Drawings - Method of indicating surface texture
1-4 Responsibilities
- Design Offices : indicate the Applicable Surface Roughness Values.
- Manufacturing Organizations : Apply the stipulated requirements.
- Quality Organizations: Ensure compliance with Design Office Requirements.

2 Requirements
2-1 General
Surface Roughness Values shall be specified prior to definition of the Protective Treatment which
may be applied later.
Generally, the Manufacturing Process of Metallic and Composite Items is different.
Surface Roughness Values shall be expressed in m
Consequently, when specifying the Roughness Values, the Designer shall select the highest possible
Roughness Value for the Specified Functioning of the Item and take into consideration the final
Function/Purpose of the Item concerned.

3 Indication on Drawings
3-1 General
All Airbus Drawings, whatever their origin (Members/Associated Partners/Subcontractors) shall refer
to ABD0002 for Surface Roughness requirements.
The point of the serves to indicate the Targeted Roughness of a particular Surface.
Unless otherwise stated, on Transition Surfaces, such as oblique surfaces, the Surface Roughness
shall be considered as equal to the Roughest adjacent surface.
Where the Designer requires a particular Process (example, polishing, lapping), the method shall be
also indicated by the Surface Roughness Symbol. See Figure "D".
The method for indicating a Roughness Value for a Restricted area is shown at Figure "E".
Where Surface Roughness indications and Measuring Methods (as required for Metallic Materials)
do not apply, the Surface Roughness shall be defined by:
- either a Statement indicated directly on the affected Drawing,
- or reference to another Standard or Manufacturing Process Specification stated directly on the
affected Drawing.
