ES Class 4 Notes

The document discusses electrical circuits and circuit analysis techniques. It reviews concepts taught in a previous class such as passive elements, resistors, Ohm's law, current and voltage dividers, KCL, and KVL. The next class will cover nodal analysis and mesh analysis for circuit analysis, including numerical examples. Nodal analysis uses node voltages as unknown variables and is suited for circuits with more current sources. Mesh analysis uses mesh currents as unknowns and is suited for circuits with more voltage sources. Steps for performing nodal analysis are outlined. Two numerical examples applying nodal analysis to solve for voltages and currents in given circuits are also presented.

Circuit Analysis

Why Circuit Analysis?

Circuits/Network: More complicated analysis
Set of Linear Algebraic equations
Nodal Analysis  variables are voltages (Node voltages)
 Circuits having more Current sources
Mesh or Loop Analysis  variables are current (Mesh currents)
 Circuits having more Voltage sources

Steps of Nodal Analysis

1. Choose an essential node and name it as a reference node.
Symbols used -

2. Assign node voltages to the other nodes and currents in each

branch.
3. Apply KCL to each node other than the reference and express
currents in terms of node voltages.
4. Solve the resulting system of linear equations.
