CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

In the Philippines, Sari-sari store or neighborhood sundry store is

the privately owned operating within the shopkeeper’s residence. It has an
important economic and social location in the Filipino community. It is also
presence in the barrios, barangays, municipalities and cities that have
become part of our daily lives.
The sari-sari store is one of the types of convenience store. The
store is often along the street and attached to or part of the owner’s house.
Some typical sari-sari store settings have a grills or screens for protection
against theft and also to cover the variety of snacks, detergent products and
others.
The network of sari-sari stores nationwide account for almost
seventy-percent (70%) sales of manufactured consumer food products,
which makes it a valuable part of the economy and an important conduit for
making vital goods available to Filipino neighborhood communities (Magna
Kultura, 2011).
According to Kultura (2011), the sari-sari store has remained
popular as a micro enterprise, resulting to have a valuable part of the
economy and to contribute to the grassroots of it.
In the Greater Manila Area (2013), sari-sari stores generally source
almost a third of their products from market stalls. Urbanity of the store’s
location also plays a part in affecting a sari-sari store’s purchase preference.
Based on Nielsen’s GMA Census, sari-sari stores located in more urban
areas tend to rely more on supermarkets and company salespersons than

their more rural counterparts who source more products from wholesalers
and market stalls. Manufacturers would generate cost-savings by using the
most efficient route-to-market for their products.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Sari-sari store is the term used in the Philippines as a small
convenience store or retail store. Sari-sari (variety or general) store has been
created that aims to provide the needs of our customer. It also has a clear
business objective to promote daily need foods products. It is not just a store
that sells a single items but it is also a place of congregation where your can
have fine time with the neighborhood and can catch up on the local rumours
or called “chismis” and also their “tambayan.”
According to James Tuckerman (2014), sari-sari store is uniquely
positioned to deliver value to start-ups. “Sari-sari store will provide a
service,” In order to be deliver on this value proposition, we uniqueness.
This capability has taken considerable time and resources to develop and
forms the cornerstone of our competitive advantage.
Based on Tuckerman (2014), to build a sari-sari store is not easy. It
must consider the uniqueness, time and resources of it to develop a
competitive store. He also tells that we must give our full effort and time to
have a good service and to maintain the good status of our business.
“Sari-sari stores play a pivotal role in filling the ‘unbanked’ gap,”
(Dominguez, 2017) a market analyst of IDC Philippines.
On the other hand, sari-sari stores have higher prices when
compared to supermarkets but provides several benefits to their customers.
It also allows members of the community easy access to basic commodities
at low costs. It is also important in the store to have a good status that will
have a constant earned of money and still seen to survive in long term.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to Dorling (2013), the theory of customer service is

based on identifying and satisfying your customers' needs and exceeding
their expectations. A company must be totally committed to delivering
consistently high standards of service to gain and retain customer loyalty.
Everyone from top management on down must be tuned into what the
customer wants. Creating a customer service culture within a company can
help build success. Customer satisfaction and loyalty are inextricably linked
to the quality of customer service and ultimately to the company's
profitability.
Based on Dorling’s theory (2013) the customer service theory is
how you deliver your product or service to the customer with accessibility,
efficiency, cost-effectiveness and satisfaction. Customer service is about
creating relationship of trust and loyalty beyond the immediate interaction.
It is the process of helping people find what they want during the entire
transaction cycle.
"The first rule of any technology used in a business is that
automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The
second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify
the inefficiency (Gates, 2012).”

Nowadays we are facing modernization especially in the field of

business. It is easier to produce a product or render a service in having a
machine or equipment to use in transaction and interaction to the customer
and in the market. Technology in business is powerful to use to make it
productive to everyone. Because of that many people grow and they are
successful in life - and now they're also known as an entrepreneur.

Created by Fishbein and Ajzen in the late 1960s, the Theory of

Reasoned Action centers its analysis on the importance of pre-existing
attitudes in the decision-making process. The core of the theory posits that
consumers act on a behavior based on their intention to create or receive a
particular outcome. In this analysis, consumers are rational actors who
choose to act in their best interests.
According to this theory, specifically is critical in the decision-
making process. A consumer only takes a specific action when there is an
equally specific result expected. From the time the consumer decides to act
to the time the action is completed, the consumer retains the ability to
change his or her mind and decide on a different course of action.

CHAPTER III
Methods and Procedure
This chapter presents the methods to be used in the study. It also
describes the subjects of the study, the instruments used, the procedure of
data gathering, and the statistical treatment of the data.

Methods of Research Used

Quantitative research will be used in this study. This method will
help the researchers to easily determine the factors affecting the growth of
the sari-sari stores in Tabing-Ilog Marilao, Bulacan and aside from it this
study is more on insights of the respondents to mainly deals with survey
method and quantitative research.

Subject of the Study

The study will be conducted at Tabing-Ilog Marilao, Bulacan. Sari-
sari store owners will be selected to participate in our study. The subjects
and respondents of this study will be the 20 sari-sari store owners in
Tabing-Ilog Marilao, Bulacan.

Sampling Technique Used

The sampling technique that utilized by the researchers is called cluster
sampling it divides the population into clusters (groups) and then randomly
select some of the clusters. All the members from these clusters are in the
cluster sample. The researchers choose 20 respondents that will randomly
selected in each every group of store owners.

Research Instrument Used

ASSEMBLYWOMAN FELICITA G. BERNARDINO
MEMORIAL TRADE SCHOOL

The survey – questionnaire was designed to seek information in order

to assess the factors affecting the growth of the sari-sari stores in Tabing-
Ilog Marilao, Bulacan. By this instrument, the researchers can gather
information easily and interpret the data.

Data Gathering Procedure

Before we proceed in the process of survey, we must first validate
our survey-questionnaire. The researchers deal with the construction and
content validation of the questionnaire and our professor was requested to
validate it. Then if everything is settled, the researcher now starts their
interview and distribution of the questionnaire proper to the participants.
These were used to gather data in order to answer the problems set in this
research. When interview proper is being held, participants was given time
to answer questions being thrown to them. The ending of the interview and
answering questionnaire was based on the responses of the participants.
Lastly, it deals with the tabulating, analyzing and interpreting the data
gathered during several statistical tools.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The statistical significance derived from this result will depict

predictability of one variable to the other ad vice versa. By analyzing this

outcome would unleash possible influences of the independent variables to

the dependent variables. Thus, we can conclude what should be the proper

course of action, perhaps suggestion for a better teaching and learning

situations.

To interpret the data gathered the researched will used:
