1. A random sample of 200 tins of coconut oil gave an average weight of 4.95kgs. With s.d of
0.21kg. (a) Do we accept that the net weight is 5 kgs per tin at 5% level? Do we accept that
the net weight is 5 kgs per tin at 1% level? Two tailed test. |z|=3.36. H0 is rejected. Hence
we cannot consider the net weight is 5kgs at both the level of significance.
2. A manufacturer of ball pens claims that a certain pen be manufactures has a mean writing
life of 400 pages with a s.d of 20 pages. A purchasing agent selects a sample of 100 pens and
puts them for test. The mean writing life for the sample was 390 pages. Should the
purchasing agent reject the manufacturers claim at 5% level? The table value of z at 5% level
is 1.96 for two tail test and 1.64 approximately for one tail test. Two tailed test. |z|=5, H0 is
rejected. Therefore the manufacturer’s claim is rejected.
3. The normal population has a mean of 6.48 and s.d of 1.5. In a sample of 400 members mean
is 6.75. Is the difference significant? Two tailed test. |z|=3.6, H0 is rejected. Therefore the
difference is significant.
4. A sample of 900 members has mean of 3.4cms and s.d is 2.61cms. Is the sample from a large
population of mean 3.25cm and s.d is 2.61cms. If the population is normal and its mean is
unknown find the 95% confidence limits of true mean. Two tailed test. |z|=1.724. H0 is
accepted. Therefore the sample has been drawn from the large population with mean
3.25. then 95% confidence limits are 3.57 and 3.2295
5. An insurance agent has claimed that the average age of policy holders who insure through
him is less than the average for all agents which is 30.5 years. A random sample of 100 policy
holders who had insured through him reveal that the mean and s.d are 28.8 years and 6.35
years respectively. Test his claim at 5% level of significance. Left tailed test . |z|=2.68. H0 is
rejected. Hence the claim of the agent is valid.
6. A machine is excepted to produce nails of length 2 cm. A random sample of 25 nails gave a
average length 2.1 cm with s.d 0.25 cm. Can it be said that the machine is producing nails as
per specification? Two tailed test.|z|=2. H0 is rejected at 5% LOS and accepted at 1% LOS.
7. In a sample of 1,000 people in Maharashtra, 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat
eaters. Can we assume that both rice and wheat are equally popular in this state at 1% level
of significance. Two tailed test . |z|=2.532. H0 is accepted . We may conclude that rice and
wheat eaters are equally popular in Maharashtra state.
8. 20 people were attacked by a disease and only 18 survived. Will you reject the hypothesis
that the survival rate, if attacked by this disease, is 85% in favour of the hypothesis that is is
more, at 5% level. Right tailed test. |z|=0.633. H0 is accepted.
9. A manufacturer claimed that at least 95% of the equipment which he supplied to a factory
conformed to specifications. An examination of a sample of 200 pieces of equipments
revealed that 18 were faulty. Test his claim at a significance level of 5% and 1%. Right tailed
test. |z|=2.6. Reject H0 at 5% and 1% LOS.
10. In a big city 325 men out of 600 men were found to be smokers. Does this information
support the conclusion that the majority of men in this city are smokers. Right tailed test.
|z|=2.04. H0 is rejected at 5% LOS and accepted at 1% LOS.
