Chapter 1

The document discusses factors that influence students' academic performance, particularly their study habits. It first explains that study habits play an important role in helping students learn and perform well academically in college. Several studies are then cited that show relationships between students' study habits and their performance. Specifically, accounting students with better study habits tend to perform better despite studying less hours, and three-fourths of students in the Philippines who had adopted effective study methods received high scores. However, some students in the Philippines and Davao City were found to have poor study habits that negatively impacted their academic performance. Overall, the document analyzes research demonstrating how students' study habits can influence their success in tertiary education.

Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Rationale

Students in tertiary education become more goal-oriented and serious on the

paths they are voyaging compared to their younger years. There are different

contributing factors to better learning of the student such as good educators,

conducive environment, parents’ support, quality books and also a major factor to be

consider are the study habits. Tope (2011) describes study habit as learning

tendencies that enable students to work privately. Study habits are developed by

students for them to survive in the jungle of their college years. It contributed to the

process of learning of the students and plays an important role in their academic

performances.

In the global study, a study in Iran mentioned the statement of Nonis and

Hudson (2010) that there is no significant relationship between the hours allotted by

the students to study and their academic performance. However, it was pointed out

on their study that the accounting students have more appropriate study habits and

tend to study lesser time the other students, but they enjoy better academic

performance (as cited by Garkas, et al. 2011).

In Philippines, a study situated Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya were School of

Accountancy was focused, three-fourths (76.50%) of the respondents have good

study methods as implied by their high scores. Probably, they had adopted study

methods that enable them to do their homeworks efficiently and do great on their

examinations. They tend to be well-organized since they make most out of their
study time. In this case, they get to enjoy more on other things aside from studying

(Vergara, et al. 2015).

In the local setting specially in Davao City, Nacito (2008) found that Grade Six

students enrolled in Piedad District of Toril as well as the Freshmen students of Erico

T. Nograles National High School both need to improve their study habits due to their

low academic performance. In addition, college students of the University of

Mindanao have lack study of habits which can affect to their academic performance

in school. One of the concerns of the Department of Education (DepEd) is the

declining academic performance of the students in Davao Region. This is affirmed in

the findings of Ramento (2011) in his study that the declining rates of the

performance of the students in Davao City were due to the poor study habits or week

study skills.
